boys_track_icon1UC San Diego sophomore and former Marina High School pole vaulter Leon Roach, 19,  died Saturday afternoon, two days after missing the practice mat and hitting his head on concrete during a practice session.

Roach, a 2008 all-county selection, was also a state meet finalist. His personal best clearance of 15 feet, 4 inches is tied  for second all-time in school history and is among the top 30 marks all-time in Orange County history.

According to UCSD, Roach was one of 83 students to be named to the 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic team.

An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

During his tenure, the girls team won 24 league titles, eight Orange County Championships, a CIF title in 1994 and finished CIF runner-up in 1984, 1993 and 1995.

His boys program also enjoyed a great deal of success, winning 16 league titles, four Orange County Championships, 2 CIF titles (1989-90), and was the CIF state runner-up in 1991.

Overall, Britt’s program produced a total of six state champions, 48 CIF champions, and seven track and field All-Americans in college.

Britt, who has not ruled out the possibility of a part time coaching position in the future, will continue in his position as meet director of the Orange County Championships track and field meet.

“My 28 years at Esperanza has really been an experience which would be difficult to put into words,” he said. “I remember the winning and losing, however I also remember the individuals and friendships.”

He entered the competition as the top ranked sophomore in the nation this season with both the 5k (223-1) and 6k hammer (197-6). With that effort, Bolton set a national sophomore class record.

The hammer throw is not currently sanctioned by CIF for high school competition.

In Wednesday’s action at the trials, Mission Viejo senior Devalle Pedrogo finished third in the 110 hurdles, clocking a wind-legal time of 13.78, which is his fastest time of 2009.

CIF state champion Dale Morgan of Taft High won the event in a time of 13.68.

Having the fortune of seeing so many wonderful efforts, picking five special moments was not easy, but here were the moments that stood out to me.

5. Saturday, April 25th 2009: Middlebrooks burns up the Orange County Championshipskyle-middlebrooks-fountain-valley2

Throughout the season, no other county sprinter enjoyed the success that Kyle Middlebrooks did, and at the county’s midseason championship meet, he enjoyed a spectacular day. In the 100 meter dash, Middlebrooks exploded out of the blocks and won in a time of 10.48. Though the time was wind-aided, it tied the fastest 100 time ever ran by a county athlete under any conditions. Later, Middlebrooks capped his day by claiming the 200 title by clocking a 21.54, the second best time posted by a county runner this season.

4. Saturday, March 28th, 2009: Koressel’s vaults into county history at Surf City

allison-koressel-huntington-beach-2For three seasons, the UCLA bound vaulter had given glimpses of her extraordinary potential. Finally, 2009 saw her put everything together. That became apparent at the Surf City Invitational in March, where Allison Koressel emerged from a competitive quartet of county vaulters to win the competition at 12 feet, seven inches. However, Koressel turned a great performance into a historical one, as she cleared 13 feet, one inch. That mark made her only the third county female vaulter to ever scale 13 feet. Koressel would go on to equal that mark in winning the competition at the Arcadia Invitational.

3. Friday, May 29th, 2009: Krinik Charges Back to win at Masters Meetsean-krinik-valencia1

Throughout the 2009 season, Valencia’s Sean Krinik thrilled fans with his displays of mental toughness and a devastating final kick in the 800 that left many in awe. Both of those characteristics were on full display in 800 race at the Masters Meet. Amid a group of tightly bunched runners midway through the final lap of the race, Krinik’s legs tangled, causing him to trip so hard that he nearly fell. With less than 200 meters remaining in the state meet qualifier and nearly the entire field ahead of him, Krinik steadied himself and put forth one of the season’s most incredible rallies, sprinting past the field to win the race in a time of 1:53.79. With the momentum of the win leading the way, Krinik ended the season by winning the 800 state title.

2. Saturday, April 11th, 2009: Woepse becomes the county’s pole vaulting standard of excellence at Arcadia.

michael-woepse-mater-dei2Entering the 2009 season, Mater Dei’s Michael Woepse was shooting for more than just a great season. Looking to climb up the county all-time pole vault list, he put forth a personal best effort 16 feet, four inches to win the competition at the Surf City Invitational. Though that effort left him tied for sixth all time in county, Woepse was determined to push the bar higher. On the big stage of the Arcadia Invitational, Woepse cleared 16-1 and 16-6 on his first attempt. With the bar at 16-9 and a family, school, and county record within reach, Woepse sprinted down the runway on his first attempt and vaulted himself over the bar. Though he nicked the bar on his way down, it stayed aloft, moving Woepse past his brother Greg (16-7) for the family and school record and past former St. Margaret standout Johnny Quinn (16-8) to become the county all-time leader. Woepse continued to excel throughout the rest of the season, achieving another one of his season long goals: a state championship.
1. Saturday, April 25th, 2009: Battered, bloodied and bruised, Foster recovers to win at the Orange County Championshipsstaci-foster-orange-lutheran21

In a season that saw Orange Lutheran’s Staci Foster further her reputation as one of the best runners in the state, no moment better defined all the attributes that made her successful in 2009 than the 1600 race at the O.C.C. Foster was engaged in a close battle with three other runners for the lead entering the final lap of the race when with 300 meter to go, Foster and Corona del Mar’s Melanie Powers inadvertently tangled feet, causing Foster and a couple of other runners to lose their balance. As Foster hit the ground and was hit by passing runners, cuts opened up that would later require 32 stitches. Undaunted by the pain and blood that followed, Foster got off the track , caught Dana Hills’ Heather Balbier at the midway point of the final lap and held her off for an inspiring win.

Boys Track and Field: State Finals Breakdown (Day 2) http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/06/06/boys-track-and-field-state-finals-breakdown-day-2/54219/ http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/2009/06/06/boys-track-and-field-state-finals-breakdown-day-2/54219/#comments Sat, 06 Jun 2009 22:30:03 +0000 Jason Eichelberger, OC Varsity.com http://ocvarsity.freedomblogging.com/?p=54219 boys_track_icon2The 2009 track and field season reaches its conclusion tonight, as the finals of the  State Track and Field Championships take place tonight at Buchanan High.

Here now is a look at the county athletes that will be in competition for a chance at a state titles.

100m

County Participant: Kyle Middlebrooks (Fountain Valley)

Outlook: Middlebrooks (10.54) posted the third best time in yesterday’s qualifying prelims. Cathedral’s Randall Carroll (10.34) had the best time of the meet. Carroll looks to be the favorite, but if Middlebrooks can finish the race as strong as he usually begins it, he will be right there.

200m

County Participant: Ameer Webb (Tustin)

Outlook: Webb looked very strong over the final 100 meters to win his prelim heat. Though Carroll is the favorite here, Webb defeated him at the CIF-SS Masters and is running as strong as anyone in the state.

800m

County Participants:
Sean Krinik (Valencia); Brendon Confer (Servite)

Outlook: Krinik’s amazing kick was on full display again in prelims, as he surged from the middle of the pack to the front over the final half of the second lap for the win and top time of the day. With his ability to recover and show sprinters speed at the end, Krinik is the favorite here. Confer was the final qualifier, but has the potential for a top five finish if he is runs well.

1600m

County Participants: Toby Villalva (El Toro), Tyler Valdes (Dana Hills); James Cameron (Mission Viejo); Zak Phillips (Dana Hills)

Outlook: For the fourth consecutive race, Villalva and Valdes battled for the first three laps before Villalva pulled out the win in prelims. These two are the favorites to be in the top three again at the finals. Though it’s hard to imagine a confident Villalva losing, Valdes is more than capable of winning this race. Cameron is another dark horse here and if he is close at the end, has the speed to pull it out. Phillips would appear to be more of a long shot, but is a tough runner and should be somewhere in the middle of the pack.

3200m

County Participant: Matt McElroy (Edison)

Outlook: This race produced one of the most dominant efforts in prep running history a season ago, when former Riverbank star German Fernandez burned up the track on the way to a national and state meet record time of 8:34.23. Though unlikely that time will be challenged, the action should be no less compelling. The state’s top two times of the season were turned in on the same day, as Novato junior Erik Olsen won the North Coast Section Meet of Champions 3200 in 8:55.06, while Camarillo sophomore Heydon Wolff (8:57.66) outlasted McElroy (8:59.91) to win the Masters. That trio are the only runners in the state this season to crack 9:00.00 and it is very likely that one will emerge as the state champion.

300m Hurdles

County Participants: Mikey Fischetti (Dana Hills); Brandon Phillips (Irvine)

Outlook: Fischetti (37.60) posted a seasonal best time yesterday in prelims and looked extremely good. In most years, he would be a strong state champion contender. Unfortunately, this is the year of La Sierra senior Reggie Wyatt, who set a national high school federation record in prelims with an astonishing 35.02 that had the entire stadium buzzing. Barring some unforeseen circumstances, Wyatt should claim the top spot here, with Fischetti having a shot at the top four. Phillips ran well at prelims too, and a top five finish could be with in reach.

400m Relay

County Team: Orange Lutheran

Outlook: The Lancers were sixth in qualifying yesterday and their time of 41.70 ranks them sixth all-time in county history. Another strong effort here could earn them a higher place in both the finals and in county history.

1600m Relay

County Participant: Orange Lutheran

Outlook: The Lancers (3:17.47) looked strong in the final event of prelims last night, finishing with the second best overall qualifying time. With the Lancers running extremely well, a state championship in this event a distinct possibility.

High Jump

County Participant: Harrison Steed (JSerra)

Outlook: Steed cleared all his heights on first attempts, and should be right in the mix for his second straight state title.

Long Jump

County Participant: Devin Harrison (Dana Hills)

Outlook: Harrison was fifth in prelims and should again be in the top five in the finals, though a higher finish is within reach for the sophomore.

Pole Vault

County Participants: Michael Woepse (Mater Dei); Matt Cooper (Mater Dei); Sean McNanny (Mission Viejo)

Outlook: Woepse looks to complete a dominant year with a state title. With his seasonal best mark of 16-9, he is the top vaulter in county history, the best in the state this season and currently fifth in the nation. McNanny and Cooper both cleared 15-3 in prelims and should finish in the top seven.

Discus

County Participant: Cecil Whiteside (Newport Harbor); Jake Pendleton (Esperanza)

Outlook: Whiteside uncorked another strong throw in prelims, going 181 feet, six inches to finish second. If he can find a similarly big throw and correct a couple mechanical issues in the finals, Whiteside is a state champion threat. Pendleton claimed the final spot in qualifying and has gone over 180 feet this season, making him a threat.
