The latest Signing Day news from the OCVarsity blog:
Several Orange County high schools have Signing Day events planned for today, with the first about to get underway.
The one that will garner the most attention isn’t until this afternoon, when San Clemente High will become the focus of the football recruiting world. That’s because Tritons offensive lineman Kyle Murphy, Orange County’s top recruit and one of the top O-line prospects in the nation, has said he’ll keep his college choice quiet until his classmates gather this afternoon.
National Letter of Intent Signing Day is Wednesday for football, soccer, track and field, cross country, men’s water polo and field hockey.
OCVarsity.com and the Register will provide non-stop coverage of the big signings of the day, but we could use your help. If you know of a school’s plans for Signing Day events — or, perhaps, if a group of athletes is having a Signing Day event that’s not at school — please email us at preps@ocregister.com with the details.
Canyon senior and defending CIF state high jump champion Cody Crampton picked up where he left off last June, winning the high jump competition at the Run for the Dream California Indoor State Meet Saturday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno.
Crampton, currently tied for ninth all-time in county history, cleared 6 feet, eight inches to win the event for the second straight year. Gyle Becker, a senior at Bullard High of Fresno, was second behind Crampton with a clearance of 6-6.
Speedy San Clemente linebacker/running back Herbert Gamboa (6-0, 205) has been offered a scholarship by Montana, Tritons assistant football coach Jaime Ortiz reports.
Gamboa is one of the fastest sprinters in Orange County and has been a playmaker for the Tritons this fall. He had two sacks and scored on a 50-yard touchdown reception in a victory against Tesoro on Thursday.
Montana is ranked seven in the FCS Top 25.
