Boys tennis: University to face San Marino in regional finals

University blanked rival Corona del Mar, 7-0, on Friday afternoon to advance to Saturday’s regional finals. The Trojans will play San Marino, the CIF-Southern Section’s Division 2 champion, at 1 p.m. at The Claremont Club.

Boys tennis: University, CdM advance to regional semifinals

Both University and Corona del Mar advanced to the semifinals of the CIF USTA Southern Regionals on Friday, meaning the county’s top two teams will play for a fourth time. The match is set to start shortly after 3 p.m.

No. 1 University knocked off ninth-seeded Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood, 6-1, behind a sweep from their four singles players. Harvard Westlake’s only point came from No. 1 doubles, as Harrison Kalt and Dylan Eisner beat Eric Tseng and Arash Hafezi, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4).

Fifth-seeded Corona del Mar beat fourth-seeded La Jolla, 5-2. Alec Adamson, Chaz Downing and Ryan Andrews each won in straight sets in singles.

Boys tennis: University, Corona del Mar advance in regionals

Neither University nor Corona del Mar had much trouble with their opening-round matches of the CIF USTA Southern Regional Boys Tennis Championships on Tuesday afternoon. Both won, 7-0, in the four-singles, three-doubles format.

Some highlights: Against Rancho Bernardo, University’s Drew Dawson won his match at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1, while the No. 3 doubles team of Arseni Yalouskikh and Billy Lee won, 6-2, 6-0. Five miles down the road, where Corona del Mar hosted El Camino Real of Woodland Hills, Ryan Andrews won, 6-0, 6-0 and the No. 2 doubles unit of Andrew Nguyen and Paul Kacik came out on top, 6-1, 6-0.

The Trojans advance to play Harvard-Westlake of North Hollywood, while the Sea Kings play La Jolla of San Diego. The winners will play each other. Both the quarterfinals and semifinals will be played Friday at The Claremont Club.

Boys tennis: Six O.C. players honored as All-Americans

Six high school tennis players from Orange County were honored as All-Americans Monday night at the fourth annual All-American and Southern California MVP banquet at the Newport Beach Yacht Club.

This year’s All-Americans were: University’s Gage Brymer, Tyler Lu and Stefan Menichella, Corona del Mar’s Alec Adamson, Dana Hills’ Alyssa Smith and Tesoro’s Mayci Jones.

Brymer and Smith, both three-time All-Americans, took home Southern California MVP honors. It was Brymer’s second straight SoCal MVP award.

 

Boys tennis: Southern California Regional pairings

The CIF released the seedings and the pairings for the Southern California Regional on Saturday night.

The first round matches are Tuesday at the home team school. The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held Friday at The Claremont Club, and the finals will be held Saturday at the same location.

Boys tennis: University wins fourth straight CIF title

University’s boys tennis team won its fourth consecutive CIF-Southern Section Division 1 title with a 13-5 victory over Corona del Mar on Friday afternoon at The Claremont Club.

Boys tennis: CIF-SS brackets released

University and Corona del Mar, the top two teams in Orange County, have drawn the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively, in the CIF-SS boys tennis playoffs. The brackets for all five divisions were released Monday at 11 a.m. and can be found on the CIF-SS’s web site.

First-round matches start Wednesday at 3 p.m.

The Trojans open by hosting the winner of the wild-card match between Crescenta Valley and Redondo Union, while the Sea Kings host Brentwood.

Valencia and Cypress received the top seeds in Division 3.

University’s Gage Brymer defeated Corona del Mar’s Alec Adamson, 8-4, Thursday at Beckman High to claim his fourth consecutive Pacific Coast League singles title.

The UCLA-bound Brymer was one of several players to repeat as champions in their respective leagues on Thursday. Fountain Valley’s John Lieu won his second straight Sunset League title and Stefan Doehler of Foothill also repeated as Century League champion.
