Boys soccer: CIF champion coach to retire

boys_soccer_iconAfter 37 years coaching football, baseball and most recently boys soccer at El Toro, Coach Ken Sjobom is going to retire at the end of the 2009-10 season.

He has lead the Chargers to two CIF Southern Section championships, including in the 2008-09 season.

Boys soccer: Santa Margarita ready to fly again?

boys_soccer_iconThe most feared and respected team in Orange County had suddenly turned into a bye week of sorts for all of the teams in the Trinity League.

It was that kind of season for Santa Margarita in 2008-09.

Disappointing. Frustrating. It's hard to win games when you score 12 goals total, and that includes nonleague games.

The Eagles  had one of the best goalkeepers in the area, William Thompson, but he could only do so much. The perennial CIF-Southern Section champions missed making the playoffs.

Boys soccer: Three top teams for 2009-10

Those three teams will likely be in the county top 10 at one time or another this upcoming boys soccer season, which will be underway in about four months.

Boys Soccer: JSerra will play for championship

MISSION VIEJO - The scoreboard read JSerra 1, Tesoro 0. At first glance, it appears to be a close, hard-fought game between two equal opponents.  That, however was not the case in this semifinal match at the Capo Valley Summer League.

Boys Soccer: San Clemente elminates Santa Margarita

MISSION VIEJO - In a game of near misses, Martin Licea finally hit the target for San Clemente "Pronier" with 10 minutes to go. And that's all the the Tritons needed to defeat Santa Margarita, 1-0, in a quarterfinal playoff game at the Capo Valley Summer League.

FULLERTON - At one point this month, Valencia didn't seem like they could score a goal even if you put an empty net in front of them. That's how much the Tigers were struggling to find any kind of rhthym in the final third. Now, though, not even two of the best defensive teams in the county can slow them down.

Boys Soccer: Valencia adavances in summer league playoffs

boys_soccer_iconFULLERTON - Valencia had one goal during Monday's quarterfinal playoff match: Attack the Brea Olinda defenders early and often, using as many different players as possible. And that they did.

At first the Wildcats' keeper was up to the task, turning away two point-blank shots, both taken by Valencia's Henry Marquez.

Boys Soccer: Fullerton, Servite play to tie

boys_soccer_iconFULLERTON - Finally. After eight games and more than 490 minutes, someone was finally able to break through Fullerton's defense and score a goal in the Sunny Hills Summer League.

Servite actually managed to score two goals in Wednesday's pool play game. But in a span of three minutes in the second half, the Indians knocked in a pair of their own, and the two teams would eventually play to a 2-2 tie.
