Cross Country: Orange County Championships will now be a two-day meet

May 14th, 2013, 10:39 am by

The county’s premier cross country invitational will be expanding next season, as the Orange County Cross Country Championships will now be a two-day meet.

The dates for the 2013 meet are Friday and Saturday, October 18th-19th at Irvine Regional Park in Orange.

Foothill cross country coach and meet director Matt Bell confirmed the move and the dates, citing the growing popularity of the meet along with other events being held simultaneously at the park creating the need to spread the invitational out from its traditional one-day format.

Releaguing: Principals approve Century conference, Yorba Linda only school moved

March 28th, 2013, 12:53 pm by

IRVINE Orange County principals voted during their final re-leaguing meeting Thursday to create a conference out a slightly new-look Century League that adds Yorba Linda.

The eight-school conference will add Yorba Linda to the existing group of Brea, Foothill, Villa Park, El Modena, Esperanza, Canyon and El Dorado. The conference gives the Century the ability to create two separate football leagues, for example, or operate two leagues under the banner of the conference.

South County’s Coast View Athletic Association also features a conference configuration with the South Coast and the Sea View leagues.

Yorba Linda opposed the move and was the only school moved in the county’s re-leaguing recommendation for the 2014-2018 cycle. The recommendation needs to be approved by the CIF-Southern Section council.

The final proposal had a big-time rival today but county leagues appear as if they will remain the same – except for the Century conference.

Boys cross country: CIF State Championships (County breakdown)

November 23rd, 2012, 9:31 pm by

Here is a look at the teams and individual runners that are scheduled to run at the 2012 CIF State Cross Country Championships Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Division 1

Teams

DANA HILLS

TRABUCO HILLS

Individuals

JUAN GONZALEZ (EL TORO, SR.)

JEFF THIES (EDISON, SR.)

Outlook: Trabuco Hills, the defending Division 1 champion, has put together two straight solid performances leading up to the state meet. The Mustangs were third at last week’ CIF-SS finals, seven points behind second place Vista Murrieta. Senior Noaki Omatsu was fourth, as all five scoring runners finished in the top 50. Dana Hills claimed the final automatic qualifying spot, 11 points better than fellow South Coast League rival El Toro. The Dolphins had four scoring runners in the top 50, led by freshman Jake Ogden. Southern Section stalwart Arcadia, which won the CIF-SS title, boasts a formidable lineup and is a favorite to bring home their second title in three years. In the individual title competition Gonzalez (the CIF-SS  champion) will look to become the first El Toro runner to win a state title since former star Brandon Bethke claimed the honor in 2004. Thies, the Sunset League champion, was eighth at the CIF-SS Finals, and should challenge for a top-15 placing. The Arcadia duo of Estevan De La Rosa and Mitchell Pratt were both in the top five at the CIF-SS finals and should also be in competition for the individual title. Pratt is the only runner to defeat Gonzalez this season, with a head to head win at the season-opening Laguna Hills Invitational.
