Brethren Christian senior Mamadou Ndiaye was named state Division 5 player of the year.

Johnson, a junior, was also named to the California overall first team and to the all-juniors team.

Boys basketball: Mater Dei’s Johnson updates colleges list

April 11th, 2013, 6:41 pm by

Mater Dei junior forward Stanley Johnson / JOSH MORGAN, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Mater Dei forward Stanley Johnson put out an updated list Thursday of the colleges he is considering.

On the list, sent out via his Twitter account, were seven teams. Here they are, in the order he listed them: Arizona, Kentucky, Florida, Oregon, Duke, UCLA and USC.

Johnson was the Register’s All-County player of the year for 2012-13 as a junior, and he is considered one of the top recruits in the country for the class of 2014.

He had a list of 10 schools in January. On that list were five schools that are apparently no longer under consideration: Louisville, UNLV, Syracuse, North Carolina State and San Diego State. Duke and Florida are new to his list.

Sink again coaching Brea girls

April 3rd, 2013, 9:48 am by

Jeff Sink has resumed coaching girls basketball at Brea Olinda after coaching the school’s boys basketball team the past two years, Brea principal Jerry Halpin confirmed this morning.

He replaces Kim Cram-Torres, who had replaced Sink, as Ladycasts coach. Cram-Torres resigned after this past season to create more time to devote to her family.

Sink, left, coached Brea’s Ladycats for 17 years before taking the boys basketball coaching position the past two years. During those 17 years, Brea won 10 CIF-Southern Section championships,  four state championships and was 480-74.

Brea’s girls team was 18-7 this past season, was Century League co-champion with Foothill and lost to Great Oak of Temecula in the first round of the Division 1AA playoffs.

Halpin said Sink sought the challenge of making the Ladycats CIF championship contenders again.

“Jeff’s heart is there with that program,” Halpin said. “It was a rough year for those kids, and it was rough on them when Kim resigned. He devoted 17 years to that program, and a lot of his former players and boosters reached out to him to get back to it.”

Brea was 44-14 during Cram-Torres’ two seasons, during which the Ladycats won two Century League championships and advanced to  the CIF-SS Division 1AA final in 2011-12.

Brea’s boys basketball team this past season finished 22-8 and advanced to the CIF-Southern Section Division 3AAA semifinals. They Wildcats were fourth in the eight-team Century League.

In Sink’s first season coaching the Brea boys team, 2011-12, the Wildcats were 16-13, beat Woodbridge in a 3AAA first-round game and lost to Bonita of La Verne in the second round.

Halpin said Sink, 61, asked to coach the school’s boys and girls teams simultaneously. “But I wouldn’t let him do it,” Halpin said. “Yes, (Mater Dei girls coach) Kevin Kiernan did that at Troy, but Kevin was 30 at the time.”
