Baseball: Valencia player signs with San Diego St.

Carl Robinson, a senior left-handed pitcher at Valencia, signed a letter of intent with San Diego State, Valencia coach Mike Scheetz reported. Robinson was All-Empire League first team as a sophomore and a junior.

CIF council: Trio of O.C. appeals fail, releaguing ends

LONG BEACH - Brea Olinda, Laguna Hills and Western each appealed their releaguing positions but none received any support in an anticlimatic finish to what had been a wild CIF-SS Council meeting.

The process started with all 12 of the Orange County League representatives voting in favor of the Orange County Area proposal. The trio of appeals were heard, but after hearing those no council member made a proposal to support an appeal.

Yes, not much of a fight today.

The big news earlier was the placement of gridiron powers Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure in the Marmonte League for football only.

After that was approved, a good chunk of the crowd here left.

Update 1

The CIF Southern Section Council is on a short break but Orange County is up next for its releaguing vote. As council meetings goes, this has been a wild affair.

Tons of people. Emotional pleas. Lots of handouts. Old Southern Section officials surfacing to see the action - Bill Clark and Paul Castillo are here.

The big question for OC is whether Laguna Hills, Western and/or Brea appeal their placement and how that goes. Stay tuned for the latest.

Baseball: Three Fullerton players commit to Division I schools

Fullerton seniors Christian Belleque, Dominic Ficociello and Michael Lorenzen have all committed to Division I colleges, Coach Marc Price confirmed in an e-mail today.

Belleque (9-2, 2.06 ERA, 78.1 IP, 99 K, 4 BB) has committed to Fresno State.

Ficociello, who is also the quarterback for the Fullerton football team, is headed to Arkansas. Ficociello had a .495 batting average with 10 home runs, 36 RBIs and 17 doubles last season.

Lorenzen (.451, seven home runs, 15 doubles and 20 stolen bases) has committed to Cal State Fullerton.

All three earned first-team All-Freeway League honors last season. Ficociello and Lorenzen were selected to the second team All-County team.

Baseball: JSerra junior outfielder commits to CS Fullerton

JSerra junior outfielder Clay Williamson has committed to CS Fullerton, Lions coach Brett Kay confirmed today.

Williamson posted a .280 batting average with 18 RBIs last season. He is the ninth Division I commit off of last season's Trinity League championship team.

The list includes returning players Bret Dahlson (Loyola Marymount), Austin Hedges (UCLA) and Grahamm Wiest (CS Fullerton), and graduates Colton Plaia (Loyola Marymount), Quinn Renner (St. Joseph's), Joe Kurrasch (Cal), Matt Paradise (Santa Clara) and Todd del Toro (Air Force Academy).

Baseball: All-County shortstop Campbell picks college

Mater Dei senior shortstop Derek Campbell has committed to Oklahoma State, Monarchs coach Burt Call confirmed today.

Campbell earned second team All-County honors last season. He posted a .340 batting average last season with seven home runs and 21 RBIs.

The Monarchs advanced to the CIF-SS Division I finals last season.

Frankly Fryer: El Toro vs. San Clemente

EL TORO (3-1) VS. NO. 9 SAN CLEMENTE (2-1)

Where, when: San Clemente High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: San Clemente coach Eric Patton usually does not get too excited or too down, so it was unusual to read his comments after the Tritons’ 34-20 loss to Santa Fe of Santa Fe Springs – he called the loss “a debacle.” You can bet that San Clemente had a very serious and very productive week of practice. The Tritons will need it. El Toro is good. The Chargers shut out defending Southern Division champion Laguna Hills, 24-0, last week and hammered Capistrano Valley, 30-3, the week before. Their loss was to Dana Hills. El Toro will be in the running for the championship in the Sea View League. But the Chargers are catching San Clemente at a time when the Tritons are intent on redeeming themselves. Look for a big game from San Clemente quarterback Chase Rettig.

Esperanza baseball player Jonathan Maciel, a senior infielder, has committed to Long Beach State, and his sister, Stephanie, a sophomore utility player on the softball team, has committed to Loyola Marymount.

Jonathan Maciel was the Sunset League's Rookie of the Year last season.

Baseball: Santa Margarita hires new coach

Former Cal State Fullerton second baseman David Bacani is the new baseball coach at Santa Margarita High, the school announced.

Bacani (Los Alamitos High) was a player and coach for the Orange County Flyers of the Golden Baseball League this season. He was also an assistant coach at Concordia University.

He played for the Titans from 1998-2001. He was drafted by the New York Mets in the 22nd round of the 2001 MLB Draft.

Bacani replaces Kris Jondle, who resigned as coach following the season.

Baseball: Wagner on the Oregon trail

Former Santa Margarita baseball player Nick Wagner has signed with Oregon, coached by former Cal State Fullerton coach George Horton, Nick's father Bob confirmed Friday.

Wagner was drafted this past June in the 44th round by the Toronto Blue Jays but has opted for college baseball.

Wagner was All-Trinity League first team this past season as a senior. He is a multi-position player, and likely will pitch and play outfield and infield positons at Oregon.
