Everyone contributed in Beckman’s 25-20, 25-13 and 25-22 three game sweep of Glendora in the first round of the CIF-SS Division II-A playoffs on Tuesday night in the Patriots gym.
“We were able to get the ball to our outside hitters and that allowed us to keep attacking offensively,” said Beckman Coach Everen Tanverdini.
The Patriots (19-6) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back in the first game winning 25-20. Casey Williams helped dictate the tempo in the first game for Beckman with three kills, one block and an ace.
“This was our best passing game yet and because of that everything else just flowed on offense,” Williams said. “You don’t even realize you are about to win because there weren’t really ups and downs, only one big high.”
In the second game it was the Lydia Bai and Teresa Stenlund show as each outside hitter ripped through the Glendora (13-10) defense with five kills and one ace for the easy 25-13 win.
“I really like our performance in the second game,” Tanverdini said. “Out passing and digging really picked up after that, which is something we are going need to do if we want to get past the second round.”
The third game would not be as easy for the Patriots as they trailed for the first time, 6-5. Both teams exchanged leads throughout the game, but sophomore Mykal Vailu’u’s three straight kills to end the game gave Beckman the win 25-22.
“We wanted this win really bad,” Vailu’u said. “This is the best I’ve seen us play as a team.”
Senior Alana Long’s 35 assists and precision setting was the catalyst that made the Patriots offense run so smoothly. She even kills of her own.
“It was easy for me to set the ball when everyone’s hitting is on like it was today,” Long said. “We were not going to lose at home.”
Williams finished with nine kills, Bai had 12, Vailu’u had five, Stenlund had eight and a game high four aces.
Karolina Stenlund also pitched in with three kills and one block.
Beckman will hit the road to take on Laguna Beach in the second round of the CIF-SS DII-A playoff on Thursday a 7 p.m.
“This win definitely gives us a confidence boost heading into the game against Laguna Beach,” Williams said. “But it’s going to be a battle.”
