Football: Beckman’s Ken Mushinskie out as head coach

February 19th, 2013, 4:30 pm by

Beckman football coach Ken Mushinskie has been forced to resign after two seasons as head coach, Mushinskie said Tuesday afternoon.

Mushinskie had a 14-11 record in two seasons and led the Patriots to the CIF Southern Division title game in 2011. The Patriots lost to Corona del Mar, 14-13,  in the title game.

“The administration wants to move forward one way and I want to move forward a different way,” Mushinskie said.

Mushinskie did not elaborate on what the differences may have been but said a couple parents of football players may have played a role in the decision.

“I know the last two years we were making huge strides at Beckman. I’m very proud of what we accomplished in terms of bringing a league championship to Beckman and a Dennis Toohey Fence Post to Beckman and going to the CIF playoffs two years in a row.”

Beckman was 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the PCL, winning the school’s league title in football in 2011.

In 2012, the Patriots were 3-8 overall and 2-3 in the PCL, losing to Garden Grove in the opening round of the playoffs.

Mushinskie said he will finish out the school year teaching at Beckman before exploring other teaching and coaching opportunities.

Mushinskie replaced Fred Shambaugh after he resigned following the 2010 season in which Shambaugh led the Patriots to the CIF Southern Division title game. Beckman lost in the finals to Garden Grove.

Football: Northwood captures the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy

November 2nd, 2012, 11:14 pm by

Northwood’s football team will take home the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, which goes to the top football team in Irvine.

The Timberwolves stayed alive in the Fence Post race by defeating University, 42-28, Thursday night in a Pacific Coast League game.

But Northwood had to wait for the final outcome of Friday’s Woodbridge-Irvine game. Woodbridge defeated Irvine, 35-7, Friday night at Irvine High to clinch a playoff berth.

Northwood wins the Fence Post because it defeated Woodbridge. Irvine could have won the Fence Post by winning Friday night.

Northwood Coach Rick Curtis and Athletic Director Dean Toohey accepted the trophy after the game. Most of the Northwood players were attending a homecoming dance. Curtis said he plans to present the trophy to his players at school next week.

Northwood is advancing to the CIF-Southern Division playoffs as the No. 2 team behind league champion Corona del Mar. Woodbridge goes as the No. 3 team and Beckman could advance as an at-large entry.

Beckman won the Fence Post last year. Northwood won it in 2010.

Football: Northwood can win Fence Post Trophy with win over Irvine

October 26th, 2012, 3:04 pm by

õîááèò

Northwood’s football team can win the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy tonight with a victory over Irvine in a Pacific Coast League game at Irvine High.

The award is given out to the top football team in Irvine, based on head-to-head match-ups with other Irvine teams. Northwood has a 2-0 record against city teams.  A victory would make Northwood 3-0 and even if the Timberwolves lost to University next week, they would have the edge over Woodbridge (2-1 against city teams).

Northwood defeated Woodbridge in the opening week of league play so would take the Fence Post on the head to head match-up.

If Irvine wins tonight, the Vaqueros can win the Fence Post by defeating Woodbridge next week.

Woodbridge can still win the Fence Post if the Warriors defeat Irvine and Northwood loses its final two games in league.

The Fence Post, selected to reflect Irvine’s ranching heritage, is named in honor of the late youth football coach Dennis Toohey, who died in 1990 at the age of 56.

Northwood won the Fence Post in 2010 while Beckman won it last year.

Boys lacrosse: Hutnick named new coach at San Clemente

September 19th, 2012, 1:34 pm by

Mike Hutnick has been named new boys lacrosse coach at San Clemente, athletic director Jon Hamro said in a release on Tuesday.

Hutnick, a former head coach at JSerra, replaces Glen Miles, who has taken over the head coaching job at St. Margaret’s.

JSerra won a share of the Trinity League title under Hutnick in 2009. Hutnick, who most recently has been an assistant at JSerra,  played lacrosse at Southern New Hampshire University.

“I am thrilled that we were able to attract such a high caliber lacrosse coach in Mike Hutnick,”  Hamro said. “Mike takes over a Triton boys’ lacrosse program that has been very successful and he fully understands what it will take to not only continue that success, but also elevate it as well.  Mike understands that success on the lacrosse field is built upon high academic expectations and character building and that hard work, commitment, dedication, and integrity are the cornerstones.”
