OJAI — For the third straight year, Gage Brymer’s name will appear on the Farnam Cup.

Brymer, the University High School senior, defeated Taylor Fritz of Torrey Pines, 6-3, 6-0, in Saturday’s high school boys division championship of the 113th Ojai Tennis Tournament.

Brymer is the first player since Bobby Riggs in 1936 to win three straight titles at Ojai. The only other to accomplish the feat was Trowbridge Hendricks in the first three years of the tournament.

Fritz matched Brymer shot for shot through the match’s first six games, as it was even at 3 games. But Brymer won the next nine in a row to claim the title in straight sets.

OJAI — Gage Brymer is one win away from making history.

The University High School senior defeated James Wade of San Marino, 6-0, 6-2, on Saturday morning to advance to the finals of the 113th Ojai Tennis Tournament.

Brymer, the two-time defending champion, plays Taylor Fritz of Torrey Pines for the championship at 2 p.m. at Libbey Park.

Only two others have won three high school boys singles titles at Ojai and none since Bobby Riggs accomplished the feat from 1934-36.

Fritz defeated Corona del Mar’s Alec Adamson, 6-1, 6-4, in the other semifinal match.

Boys basketball: Mater Dei’s Johnson updates colleges list

April 11th, 2013, 6:41 pm by

Mater Dei junior forward Stanley Johnson / JOSH MORGAN, ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

Mater Dei forward Stanley Johnson put out an updated list Thursday of the colleges he is considering.

On the list, sent out via his Twitter account, were seven teams. Here they are, in the order he listed them: Arizona, Kentucky, Florida, Oregon, Duke, UCLA and USC.

Johnson was the Register’s All-County player of the year for 2012-13 as a junior, and he is considered one of the top recruits in the country for the class of 2014.

He had a list of 10 schools in January. On that list were five schools that are apparently no longer under consideration: Louisville, UNLV, Syracuse, North Carolina State and San Diego State. Duke and Florida are new to his list.

December 3rd, 2011, 7:55 pm by

San Clemente lineman Brian Knauf was experiencing soreness and a headache Saturday, but he was able to take part in a morning workout, according to a post on the Tritons football Facebook page.

Knauf was injured during Friday’s Pac-5 semifinal game against Tesoro. He was taken off the field in an ambulance and transported to a hospital for examination after showing signs of a concussion after making a tackle late in the third quarter. Knauf also complained of a tingling sensation in both arms.

There was no word on Knauf’s status for the Pac-5 championship game against Santa Margarita next Saturday.
