As another exciting and unpredictable county regular season comes to a close, county teams will now look to ready themselves for the season’s ultimate prize, a CIF championship.

Here are my thoughts as I ranked the teams in the final county top 10 poll.

Eichelberger’s Top 10 Vote

1. Edison: The Chargers finished off a spectacular season with a 48-0 rout of Marina. Edison certainly proved they were worthy of the No. 1 ranking in my book, defeating five of the nine other teams ranked in the top 10 and running the table in the always tough Sunset League. With a balanced offense that has averaged over 30 points a game, and a defense that has allowed less than 10 points a contest, a deep run in the Pac-5 playoffs for the Chargers is expected.

2. Mission Viejo: The Diablos officially reclaimed the South Coast League throne by knocking off Dana Hills 49-17. Though the South Coast League wasn’t as tough as in previous years, this team looked almost invincible during league, winning by an average score of 51-9. It would have been nice to see the Diablos play some of the other top teams in the county, but after watching them play earlier this season, they certainly have the talent to go quite far in the Pac-5 playoffs.

3. Servite: The Friars clinched the first outright undefeated Trinity League title since the league was started in 2006 with a 48-20 win over JSerra. With that distinction and the end of “The Streak” to Mater Dei highlighting their 2009 regular season resume, the Friars enter the Pac 5 playoffs with a swell of momentum and the personnel to go far.

4. Los Alamitos: The Griffins finished off a second place league finish with a 31-22 win over Fountain Valley, in a game that went back and forth throughout. Running back Nick Richardson has enjoyed a fine season and Long Beach Poly transfer quarterback Dylan Lagarde played well in the big win over the Barons. Ironically, he will face his old team Friday, as Los Alamitos will tangle with Long Beach Poly at Veterans Stadium.

5. Dana Hills: Though quite possibly the biggest game in Dolphins football history ended in a 32-point loss to Mission Viejo, this is a program that appears to be emerging into one of the county’s best. At 8-2, the Dolphins enjoyed their best regular season record since 1991, and their two losses came against the top two teams in the county. They can continue to open eyes with a big performance against perennial Pac 5 title contender Orange Lutheran Friday night.

6. Fountain Valley: The Barons started the season 8-0, but they ended the regular season on a two-game skid, losing to Los Alamitos in a see-saw affair 31-22 in the league finale. Though their defense struggled to keep points off the board at times, an offense that features the fastest player in the county in running back Kyle Middlebrooks (18 touchdowns) should keep them competitive in any game they play.

7. Orange Lutheran: It was an interesting regular season for Coach Kunau and the Lancers, who started the season 1-3 and appeared to be a long shot to advance to the playoffs. Despite a myriad of injuries to key players, the Lancers rebounded from their slow start to win five of their last six games and finish second in the Trinity League. Despite not claiming at least a share of the league title for the first time since the Trinity League came into existence in 2006, I won’t be surprised if Orange Lutheran makes some noise in the Pac 5-playoffs.

8. La Habra: The Highlanders enter the playoffs looking to capture their third straight CIF title (2007 in the Southern Division; last season in the Southwest Division). La Habra solidified its' credentials as one of the county’s elite during the regular season with a win over San Clemente and pushed Los Alamitos before suffering their only defeat of the season. Running back Josh Quezada, healthy for the first time in a few weeks, is one of the top five backs in the county and should continue to excel in the playoffs. If quarterback Cody Clements continues his strong regular season play into the postseason, the Highlanders will be a heavy favorite to claim CIF Southwest hardware.

9. Mater Dei: Needing a win against St. John Bosco to clinch an automatic playoff berth, the Monarchs responded with a 42-14 triumph over the Braves. It was an up and down regular season for Mater Dei, which suffered close losses to Edison and Orange Lutheran, along with their first defeat to Servite since Coach Bruce Rollinson’s coaching tenure began in 1989. If Mater Dei is to advance in the Pac-5, the tandem of quarterback Max Wittick and wide receiver Victor Blackwell will be a big reason why.

10. Tustin: The Tillers rode the legs of the county’s regular season rushing leader Anthony Wilkerson (1,993 yards and 27 touchdowns) to a 9-1 record, with their only loss coming to Orange Lutheran in a game that Wilkerson didn’t play in because of injury. However, Tustin has shown some success in the passing game, as quarterback Nick DiMaio threw for over 700 yards and wasn't intercepted in 67 attempts this season. If Tustin can take some of the pressure of Wilkerson, a deep run in the Southwest playoffs is a strong possibility.

The next three:

11. Newport Harbor: The Sailors edged Esperanza in the league final to finish tied for second. After losing the coin flip, the Sailors needed and got an at large bid for the Pac-5 playoffs. They will need big efforts from their defense (led by Cal bound linebacker Cecil Whiteside and offense (led by running back Cedric Whitaker) to advance.

12. San Clemente: The Tritons survived an upset bid by Capistrano Valley 27-24 to earn the South Coast League’s third playoff spot. This team has been up and down all season. Though they have a talented quarterback in Chase Rettig, their defense allowed a lot of points throughout the regular season. With Servite being their first playoff opponent, San Clemente’s stay in the playoffs figures to be a short one.

13. Trabuco Hills: The Sea View League champions have won seven straight since losing to San Clemente and their key to success in the Southwest playoffs will be the success of the running game, where Shane DeCillo and Dylan Buononato have combined for 1,423 yards.

Going into this week of finales, here is how I voted for this week’s top 10 poll.

Eichelberger’s Top 10 Vote

1. Edison: The “Battle of the Bell” turned into another dominant showcase for the Chargers, who blanked rival Fountain Valley 24-0.

2. Mission Viejo: The Diablos stampede of the South Coast League continued with a 55-7 rout of San Clemente.

3. Servite: After beating Orange Lutheran 45-26, the Friars can clinch the Trinity League outright by beating JSerra Friday.

4. Dana Hills: The Dolphins set up a first place showdown with Mission Viejo by posting a 50-0 shutout of Aliso Niguel.

5. Los Alamitos: The Griffins pulled out a hard fought 21-19 win over Esperanza.

6. Fountain Valley: With standouts Middlebrooks and Ragland stymied by the Chargers defense, the Barons tasted defeat for the first time this season.

7. Orange Lutheran: The Lancers are now 0-6 all-time against Servite.

8. Mater Dei: A 41-24 thumping of Santa Margarita puts the Monarchs in position to claim a playoff spot with a win over St. John Bosco Friday.

9. La Habra: After dispatching Sunny Hills 41-14, the Highlanders will battle Fullerton for the Freeway League title Friday.

10. Tustin: The Tillers 30-0 win over El Dorado was their first triumph over the Golden Hawks since 2004.

The next three:

11. Newport Harbor: The Sailors had little trouble in defeating Marina 49-0.

12. Trabuco Hills: The Mustangs have scored 137 points in their last three wins.

13. San Clemente: Even after a blowout loss to Mission Viejo, the Tritons can clinch a playoff spot by beating Capistrano Valley at home.
