Boys volleyball: CIF SoCal Regional playoffs

SoCal Regional playoffs begin Tuesday in three divisions. The second round is Thursday and the finals are Saturday at Santiago Canyon College.

Here are the first round pairings

Division I

Top half

No. 8 Buchanan at No. 1 Huntington Beach

No. 4 San Clemente at No. 5 Granada Hills

Bottom half

No. 3 Loyola at No. 6 Clovis

No. 7 Santa Fe at No. 2 Otay Ranch

Boys volleyball: CIF-SS championship schedule

Here is the schedule for Saturday’s CIF-SS boys volleyball championships.

The matches will be played at Santiago Canyon College. Tickets are $9 for students with high school I.D., $5 for children, ages 5-13. There is also a $2 parking fee.

Division 5

No. 1 Saddleback Valley Christian (22-6) vs. La Quinta (19-4), 9 a.m.

Division 4

No. 1 Cathedral vs. No. 2 Bishop Montgomery, 11:30 a.m.

Division 3

No. 1 Camarillo vs. No. 2 South Pasadena, 2 p.m.

Division 2

No. 1 Esperanza (26-4) vs. No. 3 Santa Barbara (21-9), 4:30 p.m.

Division 1

No. 2 Loyola of Los Angeles (30-3) vs. No. 4 Huntington Beach (30-2), 7:30 p.m.

Girls volleyball: Application deadline approaching for CdM opening

Friday is the deadline to submit an application to apply for the open girls coaching position at Corona del Mar HS.

Interested applicants should send a letter of intent, resume and up to three letters of recommendation to Athletic Director Don Grable to dgrable@nmusd.us.

Boys volleyball: Esperanza-Dos Pueblos switched

The Esperanza-Dos Pueblos boys volleyball quarterfinal has been moved from Saturday to Monday, Esperanza coach Isaac Owens confirmed in a text.

Dos Pueblos has its prom Saturday night and the Aztecs agreed to make the switch. The match will be played Monday at 7 p.m. at Esperanza.

Boys volleyball: Playoffs begin this week

The CIF-SS boys volleyball championships begin this week.

Here’s how you can help: After each match, we need for a coach to report the scores to us at 714-796-7804 or dcalhoun@ocregister.com. Please include the records for both teams, the scores for each set and a couple of stat leaders (kills, assists, blocks).

This will help me update the brackets after each round and also assist in my playoff roundups.

Girls volleyball: Dan O’Dell hired at Mater Dei

Dan O’Dell has been hired as the new girls volleyball coach at Mater Dei, the school announced Tuesday.

O’Dell was previously the assistant women’s coach at UCLA (2010-2013). He is currently the head coach of the Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club.

“Mater Dei has such an excellent reputation and I look forward to being surrounded by great students, coaches, teachers and administrators,” O’Dell said in a statement. “My goal for this program is to create an environment for the girls to excel not only in volleyball but also as people

Baseball: Santa Margarita looking for big sweep

Santa Margarita pulled off the 9-2 upset victory over second-ranked Orange Lutheran Wednesday night. The Eagles scored four runs in the third and four in the seventh on their way to the victory. The teams meet again Friday afternoon.

Cory Mendoza and Josh Meyer both had three RBI and three hits for the Eagles. Dillon Miyashiro went seven innings allowing one earned run, seven hits, walking one and striking out three.

Last week, the Eagles suffered a pair of one-run losses to top-ranked Mater Dei.

Boys volleyball: San Clemente and Dana Hills collide tonight

The match of year is here … again.

Dana Hills, ranked third in the county, will host top-ranked San Clemente with the outright South Coast League title on the line tonight at Dana Hills.

In the first match, the Tritons edged the Dolphins in five sets, April 2. What does Dana Hills coach Oz Simmons expect this around?

Boys volleyball: Esperanza clinches league title

The fourth-ranked Aztecs (21-4, 11-0) clinched their third consecutive Century League title with Wednesday’s 23-25, 26-24, 25-21, 25-13 victory over Foothill.

Jake Arnitz led Esperanza with 33 kills and five blocks. Ben Oxnard had 11 kills and 13 digs. Ryan Heller had 59 assists and three blocks. The Aztecs are the top-ranked team in Division 2.

Girls volleyball: Tesoro’s Gleason signs with Utah St.

Hannah Gleason (Tesoro HS) signed with Utah State and will enroll in the fall. Gleason earned first team all-county honors last season for the Titans.

Utah St. coach Grayson DuBose said: “Hannah brings a lot of high level playing to our gym,” DuBose said. “She has been trained by some great coaches, and you can tell she has absorbed this training when you watch her play, as she “sees” the game really well. She also has a high level of character which we always look for in players.”

Erica Moscoso (Capistrano Valley) signed with Utah State in the fall.

Boys volleyball: County teams advance to semifinals in Santa Barbara

Esperanza and Corona del Mar have advanced to the semifinals of the Karch Kiraly Tournament of Champions at Santa Barbara high.

The Aztecs will face Bellarmine Prep today and Corona del Mar will face Mira Costa.

The Aztecs defeated Bullard (25-17, 25-13, 25-21) and Santa Barbara (20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, 15-12) Friday to advance. Jake Arnitz had 30 kills in the victory over Santa Barbara
