Haylie Wagner’s blog on the road to WCWS: Day 2

May 21st, 2013, 9:59 pm by

Michigan pitcher Haylie Wagner, a former three-time All-County selection from El Modena High, will be providing OCVarsity with a daily blog throughout the NCAA softball championships and hopefully into the College World Series.

Hello There!!

Today has been a great day for Michigan Softball! We all got to practice and were really pumped we are 1 of 16 teams left!

As we all got really excited to start practice, we realized that our managers weren’t there to set anything up and Hutch said we didn’t need anything.  We were all really confused but we just played along.

We started with a stretching session with our awesome strength and conditioning coach, Lew! After that, Hutch pulled us together, gave us a little pep talk and told us, “Today we are going to have a unique practice, go put your stuff away, go in the locker room, put on shorts and running shoes, and get into one of the coaches car. We are going on a field trip.” So my team is all about surprises and we get giddy about everything, so we all tried guessing what it is….many teammates guessed ice cream, yoga, boxing session, Hutch’s house, and a lot of other random things that it would never be (like skydiving!). As we wait patiently, enjoying the car ride, we end up at Zap Zone!! We were going laser tagging!! WOOOHOOO! This was an awesome surprise and we were ready to shoot, attack, and just have a great time!

We made 2 teams. The Blue team: Staff and Freshmen vs. Red Team: Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors.  Red team(my team) won the first round and we were really pumped! We were on fire but the Blue team came back and won the next two games. GRRRR! Jen Brundage, the pitching coach, Dan, our trainer, and Lew were on fire the entire game! Even though my team lost we still had an absolute blast and will definitely have a rematch in the future! But hey….The Blue Team Always wins! And we are all on the Blue Team here! :) So our fun was over and we all thought we were just going back to the field, but then all of a sudden we whip into Dairy Queen!! Ice cream again, 2 weeks in a row! This isn’t heard of but we loved it! And of course love our coaches and Hutch!! This really was an amazing practice day!!

Overall, we had an fantastic day and we had our “unique” practice Hutch promised us.  Wish we could go laser tagging everyday!

Haylie Wagner

So you’ve heard about Michigan Softball’s day, but right now lets take a moment and think about Moore, Oklahoma.  There are people who have lost their sons, daughters, parents, friends, and family.  Watching all these videos on the news, makes me blessed on what I have and still have today.  This is extremely devastating, and they are all in our prayers.  I hope everyone can do everything they can to help Moore be rebuilt and help anyone in need, especially by donating, like I did.  Words cannot describe how devastated, and sad I am for them.  I hope everyone stays strong over there and take it day by day! They are all in our prayers!!! Pray for Oklahoma!

Live everyday to the fullest, and be blessed with what you have, tomorrow is a new day, and a day to get better for Michigan Softball! Can’t wait to be on Alumni Field doing what I love, hopefully the weather holds up! Talk to you all tomorrow! GO BLUE! Have a wonderful day! Keep OK in your prayers!

Softball: YL holds on to beat Canyon

May 21st, 2013, 5:27 pm by

Canyon is down to its final three outs and Yorba Linda leads, 5-2, in the bottom of the seventh.

Jill Rock keeps hope alive with her second single of the game to lead off the bottom of the seventh.

Here comes the top of the order for the Comanches. I’ve seen Canyon pull off some crazy comebacks in the past, but three runs off YL ace Paige von Sprecken is a tall order.

PVS strikes out Ali Giannavola. One down.

Breanna Betschel beats out and infield single and Canyon has runners on first and second.

Paulina Anasis grounds one back to PVS and she gets the lead runner at third. Two down.

Hailey Hilburn flies out to right field to end the game.

Yorba Linda beats Canyon, 5-2, to advance to the Division 1 quarterfinals.

Miranda Viramontes threw a no-hitter to beat Trabuco Hills, 2-0, in Division 2.

Yorba Linda leads Canyon, 5-2, after 6 innings.

Foothill leads West Ranch, 4-2, late in that one.

Paige von Sprecken picks up a one-out single for YL in the top of the fifth. PVS is 2 for 2 with a walk and two RBI.

Canyon is threatening here in the bottom of the fifth after an E-3, a single by Jill Rock and an E-5 … THE BASES ARE JUICED!!!!

Breanna Betschel singles up the middle and Canyon cuts YL’s lead to 5-1. THE BASES ARE STILL JUICED!!!

Breanna Betschel drive sin a run with a ground out and Canyon cuts it to 5-2.

Hailey Hilburn with a check-swing pop out. Two down.

PVS strikes out Taylor Swearingen to end the threat.

Yorba Linda 5, Canyon 2 after 5 innings.

Holy cow! Pacifica’s Rebecca Lee just hit her third home run of the game, a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth to give the Mariners a 9-0 lead over Murrieta Valley. Lee is 3 for 3 with three homers and 8 RBI.

Dana Hills leads South Hills, 5-2, in Division 2.

Rosary leads Edison, 6-3, in the fifth. Edison’s Sammy Cordova has been knocked out of that game.

Norco beats Cypress, 3-2.

Softball: Mustangs want more, plus more updates

May 21st, 2013, 4:45 pm by

Yorba Linda wants more like that kid in the at&t commercials.

Lauren Brooks and Mallory Cleveland get back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the fourth and then lead-off hitter Holly Fauria triples to left center to drive in two runs and give Yorba Linda a 4-0 lead over Canyon.

WILD PITCH!!! Fauria scores from third to make it 5-0.

PVS with a 1-2-3 inning to retire Canyon in the top of the fourth.

Yorba Linda 5, Canyon 0 after 4 innings.

Rebecca Lee hits her second homer of the day, a solo bomb in the bottom of the third, and Pacifica leads Murrieta Valley, 5-0.

Foothill and West Ranch are tied 2-2 in the top of the third.

Marina and Etiwanda are tied, 1-1, in top of the sixth.

Norco leads Cypress, 3-2, after 5 innings.

Softball: THE BASES ARE JUICED!!!

May 21st, 2013, 4:29 pm by

Speedy Holly Fauria beats out an infield single with a high chopper up the middle with one out in the top of the third.

Dana Hendry singles through the right side of the infield and the Mustangs have runners on first and second with one out.

Taylor Townsend gets HBP’s for the second straight at bat and … THE BASES ARE JUICED!!!!

Now it’s Canyon ace Hailey Hilburn’s turn to try and dodge some bullets.

Jordan Townsend with a grounder to short, Canyon’s Paulina Anasis charges and gets the runner at the plate. Two down. THE BASES ARE STILL JUICED!!!

Paige von Sprecken singles to right … D’Oh!! It gets past the right fielder and two runs come in to score. YL was going to score one for sure, but the E-9 gave them an insurance run. Amanda Dirks grounds out to end the inning.

The Canyon DJ is playing my other jam, Katy Perry’s “Firework,” between innings. That should fire up the Comanches.

After putting YL up 2-0 in the top of the third, PVS puts down Canyon with a 1-2-3 inning.

Yorba Linda 2, Canyon 0 after 3 innings.

Norco takes a 3-2 lead on Cypress after 4 innings.

Marina leads Etiwanda, 1-0, in the top of the fourth.

Softball: My Spidey senes are tingling

May 21st, 2013, 3:57 pm by

Canyon ace Hailey Hilburn walks her counterpart, Paige von Sprecken, to lead off the top of the second.

Amanda Dirks sacrifices courtesy runner Ashley Yoo to second.

Harvard-bound Cindy Okamoto moves you to third with a ground out.

Can YL manufacture a run right here? No. Lauren Brooks pops out to SS Paulina Anasis to end the inning.

Jezz Portillo, who has been hot for Canyon lately, leads off the bottom of the triple with a triple to the gap in right-center field. A lot of coaches would have held the runner at second and settled for a double, but Canyon coach Dan hay likes his base runners to be aggressive and he was sending her the whole way.

My Spidey senses are tingling and I sense Canyon getting a run.

Softball: Live from Canyon High

May 21st, 2013, 3:36 pm by

I have the Mobile OCVarsity Media Center set up at Canyon High for the CIF-SS Division 1 second-round game between future Century League-rivals Yorba Linda and Canyon.

I’m expecting a pitching duel between San Diego-committed Paige von Sprecken of YL and Utah-commited Hailey Hilburn of Canyon, which means a Beer League slugfest could break out.

No time to mess around.

IT’S TIIIIIIIIIIME!!!

Yorba Linda, are you ready?

Canyon, are you ready?

LET’S GET IT ON!!!!

Softball: Wagner’s road to WCWS blog

May 20th, 2013, 10:27 pm by

Michigan pitcher Haylie Wagner, a former three-time All-County selection from El Modena High, will be providing OCVarsity with a daily blog throughout the NCAA softball championships and hopefully into the College World Series.

Hi Everyone! My name is Haylie Wagner and I play softball at the University of Michigan. I am from the City of Orange and a proud El Modena Alumni! Woohoo! Go Vanguards!

Every year my team and I always have the same goal; win a National Championship in Oklahoma City, and we are on the road to just that.  I am going to give you an inside look on Michigan Softball and keep you updated through the tournament on all the fun and action we have!  I hope you enjoy it!

This past weekend we came together as a team and ended up beating Cal to be Regional Champs, which is the first step to OKC.  Now if you watched, you all saw the action on the field but you don’t know what goes on behind the scenes between games and game days.  Before the tournament began Thursday night our coaches took us out to dinner and then we had an ice cream and movie night with the team and coaches.  We watched Cinderella Man and everyone was really inspired by the movie.  We have all come to realize that a team and being able to win games all comes from within and doing everything you can to fight and win no matter what the obstacles are.

Now we are onto the next chapter, Super Regionals, and I am blessed to be able to say that Michigan Softball is 1 of 16 teams left to practice Tuesday afternoon! Can’t wait to tell you more tomorrow! I hope everyone has a wonderful day and GO BLUE!
