Two Mater Dei players selected to McDonald’s All-American team

Mater Dei girls basketball players Jordan Adams and Nirra Fields were selected to the McDonald’s All-American high school basketball team Thursday.

Adams, who has signed with USC, and Fields, who has signed with UCLA, were picked to play in the March 28 game in Chicago. They were among five Southern California players chosen for the boys and girls games.

Other Southern California players selected were: La Verne Lutheran’s Grant Jerrett (boys), Silverado of Victorville’s Candice Agee (girls) and Windward of Los Angeles’ Imani Stafford (girls).

 

Softball: Fitzgerald commits to St. John’s

Junior infielder Kaitlin Fitzgerald of Rosary committed to St. John’s, Royals softball coach Tom Tice announced.

Fitzgerald, a two-time All-Trinity selection, has been a starter since her freshman year, anchoring first base in 2010 and third base in 2011.

Girls basketball: Durian signs with Western Oregon

Esperanza forward Mariah Durian signed with Western Oregon, her father, Gary Durian, announced.

Durian is averaging 20.4 points and 11.5 rebounds per game this season.

Football: Tuerk signs with USC; Welch absent

All-County offensive lineman Max Tuerk signed with USC during a signing ceremony with other Santa Margarita athletes on Wednesday morning at Santa Margarita High.

Tuerk’s parents were in attendance, but Eagles football coach Harry Welch, who is on administrative leave, was not at the signing ceremony.

“Max’s mom and dad were here this morning,” Santa Margarita athletic director Richard Schaaf said. “For him to sign, and there’s a real possibility he could walk on and be a starting offensive lineman, is exciting. I guess USC just signed some guy from up in Washington and he’s one of the top-five guys in the country, so it sounds like they got a great freshmen group coming in.”

Softball: Sanchez chooses Simpson

Rosary’s Darby Sanchez, a senior left fielder, accepted an athletic scholarship from Simpson University in Redding, Rosary softball coach Tom Tice announced.

Sanchez played every game of her junior season, batting .279 with 10 RBI and 8 runs scored. She was named All-Trinity League Honorable Mention. During her all-league sophomore season, she hit the game-winning home run in Rosary’s CIF upset of Santiago of Corona, the state’s top-ranked team.

Girls basketball: Garden Grove League showdown on Wednesday

Los Amigos and Rancho Alamitos shared the Garden Grove League girls basketball title last season. The Lobos beat the Vaqueros at Rancho Alamitos and the Vaqueros beat the Lobos in their home gym.

Los Amigos and Rancho Alamitos enter Wednesday’s showdown at 6 p.m. at Los Amigos High with identical records. Both teams are 10-7 overall and 4-0 in league. First place is on the line.

Girls basketball: Dougherty commits to Seattle

Troy’s Shelby Dougherty, a 5-9, senior guard, committed to Seattle on Sunday, Warriors girls basketball coach Roger Anderson confirmed.

Dougherty is a two-time All-Freeway League selection and she made All-CIF last season.

St. Mary’s of Phoenix, Ariz., proved why it belongs in the top spot in the national rankings by defeating previous No. 5 Windward of L.A., 62-48, on Monday.

Football: Manning getting a lot of recruiting attention

El Toro quarterback Conner Manning, The Register’s 2011 offensive player of the year, is starting to get some attention from college recruiters.

The 6-2, 180-pound junior is receiving interest from USC, Missouri, Colorado, Stanford and Northern Arizona, Chargers coach Rob Frith confirmed.

Girls basketball: Olukemi at Villa Park

All-County forward Jeanier Olukemi has enrolled at Villa Park, Spartans athletic director Tom Fox confirmed.

Olukemi, a two-time All-County selection, left Brea Olinda after last season and tried to enroll at Sonora but was denied a hardship transfer.
