Washington outfielder Kylee Lahners, a former three-time All0County selection at Laguna Hills, made a leaping backhand catch to steal a two-run homer from Missouri’s Mackenzie Sykes in the top of the first inning of Game 2 of the NCAA super regional series on Friday at University Field in Columbia, Mo.

Haylie Wagner’s blog on the road to the WCWS: Day 5

May 24th, 2013, 7:03 pm by

Michigan pitcher Haylie Wagner, a former three-time All-County selection from El Modena High, will be providing OCVarsity with a daily blog throughout the NCAA softball championships and hopefully into the Women’s College World Series.

Hey Everyone!

Today’s blog is going to be a little shorter but will hopefully have a lot more to talk about tomorrow!
I hope you all tuned in on ESPNU today and watched Michigan Softball!! It was a pretty intense game and the most exciting ending! If you all watched, we had a 2-0 lead going throughout the entire game until the 7th when Louisiana -Lafayette’s (Brianna Cherry) hit a two-run home run to tie it. LaLa went up in the 8th to have a 3-2 lead! Sara (Driesenga) did an amazing job pitching today, and then I came in for the last two outs of the game with runners on first and third. Yes, this was a very crucial moment and I embraced it all the way! We got out of the jam with a strikeout and pop up foul to Amy Knapp! It was our turn to come together as a team and get this win!

Haylie Wagner

Bottom of the 8th, and Caitlin Blanchard got HBP and then Ashley Lane hits a walk-off Home run to win it!! She had an Ash Bash as our SID would say! It was such an exciting experience and so happy to be part of this amazing team!

This game shows everyone one thing … never quit!! That is one of the reasons I love my team! We never quit and all we want to do is play. We are so pumped and we just want to be back on Alumni Field doing what we love!

Check in tomorrow on ESPNU at 12 PM ET (9 AM CALI TIME!)

So Pumped! Let’s do it! All the fans go watch! Need all the support we can!

Haylie Wagner’s blog on the road to the WCWS: Day 4

May 23rd, 2013, 9:44 pm by

Michigan pitcher Haylie Wagner, a former three-time All-County selection from El Modena High, will be providing OCVarsity with a daily blog throughout the NCAA softball championships and hopefully into the College World Series.

Hi Everyone!

I am really excited to tell you about today’s day because Michigan Softball had an amazing special guest come speak to us. JIM ABBOTT!!

For all of you who don’t know Jim Abbott is a Michigan Baseball Alum as well as a major league baseball pitcher! He played for The California Angels, The Chicago White Sox, Milwuakee Brewers and New York Yankees! What makes him just even better he played despite being born without a right hand!

Jim was in town today and he was able to talk to Michigan Athletic Department, and Hutch asked if he could come talk to us! We all got to practice early and waited for him.  Before that we got to watch a little bit of him playing online, and we were absolutely amazed. We were like little kids in a candy shop, we had balls ready to be signed and couldn’t wait!

When he got there he talked about a lot of things but the main idea that stuck out with us was Trust. In playing any sport the key things is trust, not just trusting yourself but your teammates as well.  He emphasized saying that at this point in the season we have to trust each other, our coaches, and ourselves because we have put all the work in now, and now is the time we show it off.  Another aspect he talked about was how every bit counts.  A couple inches on or off the plate can make or break a game, and that goes with hitting or pitching.  Every second counts and every movement you make makes a difference on the field.

Jim also had a special presentation and showed us how he caught and threw the ball.  Now, we all were taught how to catch, throw, and field with two hands but he had to do it with one.  How incredible is that! I am still amazed and in awe on how amazing this is.  If you have never a chance a great video to watch about inches is the Al Paccino speech in the

Softball: Norco vs. Rosary Live Blog Remix

May 23rd, 2013, 9:14 pm by

I did a live blog for the Rosary-Norco CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinal on Thursday at Cal State Fullerton. Here’s how it all went down:

LIVE FROM CAL STATE FULLERTON

I didn’t have to set up the Mobile OCVarsity Media Center today because Rosary is playing defending Division 1 champion Norco at Anderson Family Field at Cal State Fullerton.

Rosary whacked top-seeded Esperanza, 5-3, and outslugged Edison, 15-6, to reach the quarterfinals. Norco beat Oxnard, 3-0, and rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Cypress, 3-2, to rech the quarterfinals. The Rosary-Norco winner plays the Pacifica-Orange Lutheran winner in the semifinals on Tuesday.

No more messing around. Let’s get down to business.

IT’S TIIIIIIIIIIIIME!!!!

Norco, are you ready?

Rosary, are you ready?

LET’S GET IT ON!!!!
