
University junior swimmer Corey Okubo showed why he’s one of the best 200 butterfliers in his age-group in the nation.
Racing for the Aquazot club, he captured the 200-yard butterfly Friday at the Texas sectional championships in a season-best 1 minute, 46.06 seconds at Texas A & M. The time keeps Okubo ranked third in the nation for 17-year-olds.
He also finished fourth in the 200 back (1:46.67, out in 51.94).
In other highlights Friday, Mater Dei freshman Brittany Kampfer placed third for the Novaquatics in the 500 free (season-best 4:49.04, third in the nation for 14-year-olds) and Foothill freshman Courtney Mykkanen took second for the Novaquatics in the 200 back (season-best 1:56.28 – No. 1 in the nation for 14-year-olds).
