Girls soccer: CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs (County Outlook, Schedule)

Here is a look at the county teams, players to watch, and first round schedule for the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

Aliso Niguel: The defending Division 1 champions snapped a four-match winless streak with a 2-1 victory over Mission Viejo in the season finale to earn the South Coast League’s No. 2 seed.Aliso Niguel’s offense has produced at least two goals in the three of the last four matches.

Canyon: The Comanches were second in the Century League heading into the final week of the season, but lost to Villa Park and Foothill, dropping them into third place. Canyon’s offense has been shut out in the last two matches after scoring 13 goals in the previous four.

Capistrano Valley: The Sea View League champions Cougars earned the No. 1 overall seed in Division 1 with a 16-1-3 overall mark. Capistrano Valley is unbeaten in its’ last 18 matches, having not lost since a 2-1 defeat to Pacifica on December 10th.

Corona del Mar: The Sea Kings claimed their third straight Pacific Coast League title on the final day of the regular season. Corona del Mar enters the playoffs having won four straight matches by a combined scored of 16-2.

Dana Hills: The Dolphins earned the No. 2 overall seed in Division 1 after posting a 6-1-1 record en route to winning the South Coast League title. The Dolphins were semifinalists last season and will look to advance to the CIF-SS Division 1 title match for the first time since 1990.

Esperanza: Though the Aztecs failed to win the Century League title for the first time in since moving into the league in 2010-11, they enter the playoffs playing their best soccer of the season. They closed with a 6-0-2 stretch over their final eight league matches and finished second to Villa Park.

Edison: The Chargers battled Los Alamitos for the Sunset League title until the final match of the season, falling a point short of its quest to win a third straight league title. Edison was unbeaten in league play, posting a 7-0-3 mark.

Foothill: The Knights grabbed the final automatic playoff berth in the Century League. Foothill has won four of its’ last five matches, scoring four goals in two of those wins.

Huntington Beach: The Oilers placed third in the Sunset League, but stumbled a bit down the stretch. Huntington Beach lost to Los Alamitos and Edison in the final week of the season and won just once in its final four matches.

JSerra: The Lions were edged out of the final automatic Trinity League berth, but earned an at-large berth. They will face Villa Park in the first round.

Laguna Hills: The Hawks snuck into the playoffs after El Toro lost two of its final three matches of the season. A victory over Trabuco Hills and a tie against San Juan Hills allowed Laguna Hills to grab the third and final automatic spot from the Sea View League.

Los Alamitos: The Griffins are the Sunset League champions for the first time since 2008-09 (the last season they advanced to the CIF-SS Division 1 title match). Los Alamitos didn’t lose a match during league play, posting a record of 8-0-2.

Mater Dei: The Monarchs sealed the final automatic berth in the Trinity League with a win over Rosary. The win was Mater Dei’s third in the final five matches of the regular season.

Mission Viejo: The Diablos entered the final week of the regular season tied with Dana Hills for first place in the South Coast League, but lost two straight home matches to San Clemente and Aliso Niguel. The Diablos have played in seven straight matches that have been decided by one goal.

Northwood: The Timberwolves enter the playoffs playing its’ best soccer of the season. After a 2-0 loss to eventual Pacific Coast League champion Corona del Mar on Jan 10, the Timberwolves won six straight and went unbeaten over their final eighth matches to claim second place.

Orange Lutheran: The Lancers won 16 matches during the regular season and finished second in the Trinity League behind champion Santa Margarita. All four of Orange Lutheran’s victories in league play came by one-goal margins.

University: The Trojans opened Pacific Coast League league play with three wins in the first four matches, staggered a bit during the second half of league play. University won just two of its final six matches, including a three-match winless streak to close the regular season.

San Clemente: The Tritons finished fourth in the South Coast League, snapping a streak of five straight years in which they would at least a share of the South Coast League title. San Clemente enters the playoffs having advanced to a county-record five straight CIF-SS Division 1 title matches.

San Juan Hills: The Stallions placed second in the Sea View League behind Capistrano Valley. They will make history on Thursday, as they will play in the CIF-SS playoffs for the first time in school history.

Santa Margarita:  The Eagles captured their fourth straight Trinity League title by defeating JSerra 2-1 in the regular season finale. Santa Margarita has advanced to the semifinals of the Division 1 playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

Villa Park: For the first time since 1988, the Spartans enter the CIF playoffs as Century League champions. Villa Park’s 10-1-1 run during league play earned them the No. 4 overall seed.
