CIF-SS DIVISION 2 PLAYOFFS
COUNTY OUTLOOK
La Habra – The Highlanders had a chance to win the Freeway League championship but lost to eventual champion Fullerton, 6-2, on Feb. 1. That ended a string of four consecutive shutouts for the Highlanders.
Foothill – The Century League might have been amomg the most competitive this season. No team could really take control, and the Knights finished as co-champions with Villa Park after winning six of their last eight games. Their only loss in that span came to El Dorado which finished third in league.
Westminster – The Lions won their first league championship in more than 30 years. Their last one came in 1982 while still in the Sunset League.Adonis Robles scored three goals for the Lions against Loara in the victory that clinched the legaue championship. He led the team with 11 goals and seven assists
Fullerton – The Indians are a solid team led by talented forward Yazi Hernandez, but they really won the Freeway League by forfeit. Sunny Hills was the class of the league, but had to battle to finish third after having to forfeit five league games because two Lancers played for an adult league team during the season. They porved, though, that they can score some goals after beating La Habra 6-2
Villa Park – The Spartans are the other team that survived the Century League war, coming out as the league co-champions with Foothill after closing out the season with victories against Brea Olinda, Canyon and Esperanza. Jason Sanders leads the team with 13 goals.
Santa Ana – Finsihed second in the Golden West League, and like always feature some talented goals scorers such as Jonathan Ornellas who scored two goals for the Saints in the season finale.
El Dorado – The Golden Hawks have one of the most explosive playmakers I have seen this season in Max Chevalier. He scored a goal in double OT against Esperanza that is probably one of the best that I have seen this season. They also won the Varsity 2 Division Championship at the North Orange County Championships in December.
Sunny Hills – How are the Lancers a Wild Card team? CIF sure didn’t do Etiwanda any favors. The Lancers are one of the top three teams in the county and have a great chance of making the championship match. The have scored 71 goals this season while giving up just seven. They have senior center back Mitchell Bell, who is one of the top defenders in the county, and Gerardo Arias who has scored 18 goals.
Segerstrom – The Jaguars went undefeated in their last five games and closed out the season with a 2-0 victory against Westminster
Brea Olinda – The Wildcats have had some injury problems this season and enter as an at large team, but the Wildcats still have some talented forwards such as junior forward Lance Halm who scored a goal in the Wildcats’ 2-0 victory in the season finale against El Dorado.
