Canyon athletic director Scott Lawson said the school hopes to announce its varsity football head coach by the end of the week.
Lawson of course could not identify the finalists for the position. But two names that could be in that finalists group are Jim Kunau and Matt Mitchell.
Kunau coached at Orange Lutheran for many years before being relieved of his duties at the end of the 2011 season. Kunau transformed Lutheran from a good small-schools team into one of the better programs in California, leading the Lancers to CIF section and state championships. What he did at Lutheran remains one of the more impressive coaching performances in county football history.
Mitchell has been an offensive coordinator at a few places, most recently at Servite. He was Servite’s offensive coordinator for the first couple of weeks of the 2012 season before Servite coach Troy Thomas sought a different direction and ousted Mitchell.
