Swim: Edison product Shields edges Lochte for silver at Worlds

December 13th, 2012, 10:33 pm · · posted by

Former Edison swimmer Tom Shields, pictured far left, edged Ryan Lochte for the silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly at the FINA short-course World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey on Thursday.

The Cal senior out-touched Lochte by five one-hundredths of a second to finish in 49.54, about three-quarter of a second behind winner Chad Le Clos of South Africa.

Le Clos tied for the silver behind Michael Phelps in the 100-meter fly at the London Games earlier this year but edged Phelps for gold in the 200 fly final.

A few swim teams in Orange County can take in pride in Shields.

He swam club for Splash, Novaquatics and the Mission Viejo Nadadores, and dominated for Edison.

He is now becoming a force on the international stage but hasn’t forgotten his roots. After the U.S. Trials this past summer, Shields returned to Estancia-based Splash to talk to the young swimmers, race them in the pool and sign autographs.

Matt Grevers (100 back), Olivia Smoliga (100 back) and the men’s 800 free relay with FAST’s Michael Klueh and Matt McLean captured gold medals for Team USA.

Chloe Sutton of the Mission Viejo Nadadores, and the sister of Orange Lutheran lineman Colin Sutton, took bronze in the 800 free.
