Fountain Valley has hired former Cypress coach and Register coach of the year Ray Fenton as its football coach, assistant principal Joe Fraser confirmed moments ago.
Fenton replaces John Shipp, who resigned after this past season. Fenton has been coaching the past few seasons at Webb of Claremont.
“We’re lucky to have him,” Fraser said. “He’s a proven leader on and off the field.”
Fountain Valley titled its press release Friday, “The Return of Ray Fenton to Orange County.”
Fenton was a Register and state coach of the year in 2007 after guiding Cypress to the CIF-Southern Section Southern Division crown.
He later received a reduction in force notice from Cypress and resigned in the spring of 2010 to accept the coaching position at Webb.
At Cypress, his teams were known for their toughness, discipline and challenging schedule. The Centurions played nonleague games against Mater Dei under Fenton.
“He’s the real deal,” Fraser said of Fenton.
