SATURDAY’S CIF-SS BOYS WATER POLO FINALS

DIVISION 1

LONG BEACH WILSON (23-7) VS. MATER DEI (30-0)

Site, time: William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center, 7 p.m.

Web: live on foxsportswest.com (Prep Zone)

Outlook: Top-seeded Mater Dei is seeking a fifth consecutive Southern Section title, including a third straight Division 1 crown. The Monarchs face a second-seeded Long Beach Wilson squad featuring key players who helped the Bruins claim the Division 2 title last season. Long Beach Wilson is led by attacker Maxwell Irving and 2-meter man Jackson Kimbell, last season’s Division 2 player of the year. Mater Dei is 2-0 against Long Beach Wilson this season.

The Monarchs beat the Bruins, 15-6, in the quarterfinals of the South Coast Tournament in September and, 14-9, in a nonleague match at Belmont Plaza on Oct. 30. Mater Dei’s James Walters didn’t play in the second game because of illness but his brother, Jon, netted nine goals, one shy of his season high. Mater Dei goalie McQuin Baron has been in strong in both victories, recording 20 and 21 saves, respectively. Long Beach Wilson is an 11-time Division 1 champion, with its last title coming in 2005. The Bruins’ 11 Division 1 titles rank second only to Newport Harbor’s 12.

Other finals at Woollett: Session 1: Division 7 – Brentwood vs. Don Lugo, 9:15 a.m.; Division 6 – La Quinta/LQ vs. Temescal Canyon, 10:30 a.m.; Division 3 – ML King vs. La Canada, 11:45 a.m. (Prep Zone); Session 2: Division 4 – Los Osos vs. Righetti, 12:45 p.m.; Division 2 – Agoura vs. Santa Barbara, 2:45 p.m. (Prep Zone); Session 3: Division 5 — Glendale vs. Pasadena Poly, 5:30 p.m.; Division 1 – Long Beach Wilson vs. Mater Dei, 7 p.m.
