The legal action taken two years ago by the Diocese of Orange, on behalf of Mater Dei, that alleged unfair business practices by the CIF-Southern Section has been settled, attorney Jerry Jackson, who represented the Diocese and Mater Dei in the matter, said Thursday.
Jackson said the CIF-Southern Section’s change in leadership, in which Rob Wigod last year replaced the retiring Jim Staunton as section commissioner, as being essential to the settlement. A notice of settlement is scheduled to be issued today at Orange County Superior Court.
“The new commissioner is a breath of fresh air in the CIF-Southern Section,” Jackson said, “and he is a commissioner who realizes that private schools in general, and Mater Dei in particular, are assets and not threats.”
The Diocese filed a legal complaint against the Southern Section in September of 2010, alleging that Mater Dei had been subjected to unfair business practices by the CIF-SS. The complaint alleged that the CIF-SS office had not dealt fairly and consistently in its handling of athletic eligibility issues regarding student-athletes who transferred to Mater Dei.
