Each week I will select an offensive, defensive and special teams star of the week. This is my pick.
No one was consulted in this selection, although, I considered asking my colleague Damian Dottore for help, but he’s too busy counting down the days to the start of the winter sports season. He’s the only one looking forward to the start of the winter sports season.
The envelope please:
Offensive
Sam Darnold, San Clemente
The sophomore quarterback made his first start Friday and all he did was complete 22 of 33 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns and one rushing score to lead the Tritons to the 29-21 come-from-behind victory over Tesoro. San Clemente trailed 21-7 going into the fourth and the Tritons scored 22 to win 29-21.
Defensive
Huntington Beach Oilers.
That’s right, this week’s defensive pick (see what I did there) goes to the Huntington Beach defensive unit. The Oilers made Friday night miserable for the Los Alamitos offense, recording five sacks (by my count) and five … I said 5 interceptions. Four of them came in the second half as the Oilers shutout the Griffins. Here are the drives for Los Alamitos in the second half … (I warn you, this isn’t pretty): interception. interception. interception. turnover on downs. turnover on downs. interception. punt. Ouch. Congrats to the Huntington Beach defense.
Special Teams
Griff Amies, Corona del Mar and Bret Miller, San Clemente
Amies went 2 for 2 on FGs Friday night and is now 16 for 17 on the year. His 16 field goals tied a county record.
Miller set the all-time CIF record for consecutive PAT attempts. Miller went 3 for 3 Friday and now has 108.
