Just another quiet night of O.C. Football. Things are certain to get even more intense over the next couple of weeks as teams start the late positioning for the playoffs. This is really the best time of the year. It is … until you realize that winter sports are right around the corner and that means winter sports previews. Can we rewind the clock?

Let’s take a look at week 8.

Don’t poke the bear

Tesoro went up 21-14 on Mission Viejo at halftime and thoughts of upset ran through the county. However, that only prompted Mission Viejo to start running through Tesoro. The Diablos went on to outscore the Titans 34-3 to take over the game.

That’s why I rated MV No. 1 in my top 10. I’m not sure any team can strike like the Diablos. RB Alex Suchesk went big-play style against the Titans. He rushed for 203 yards and scored on runs of 34, 56 and 80 yards. Max Redfield had a pair of TDs, an 80-yard pass and a 12-yard interception return.

Stage is set … almost

With Mission Viejo winning and El Toro taking care of Trabuco Hills, we’re getting closer to the epic Mission Viejo-El Toro South Coast League title showdown. El Toro has next week off. Mission Viejo has to face Trabuco Hills. If the Diablos get through unscathed, Nov. 2 should be circled on your calender. The Diablos trying to contain Conner Manning. The Chargers trying to slow down the county’s Greatest Show on Turf or Grass. I’m going out on a limb here, but I don’t think that game will end 6-3.

The OCVarsity Hype Machine is gearing up for Nov. 2.

Looking ahead in the Trinity League

The final weeks of the league will be worth watching. St. John Bosco is now in sole possession of first place, followed by Mater Dei and Santa Margarita at 2-1. Orange Lutheran and Servite at tied at 1-2, followed by JSerra.

The schedule next week: Mater Dei vs. Orange Lutheran; Servite vs. St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita vs. JSerra. Nothing would surprise me.

Edison in charge

Can Edison be stopped or even slowed in the Southwest Division? I think Tustin has the best shot, but after watching the Chargers last week and then what they did to Marina Friday, I’m not so sure anymore. Edison has allowed 17 points in four games since losing to Mater Dei. The Chargers have recorded four shutouts with two games remaining. Will Fountain Valley and/or Huntington Beach be able to take down the Chargers? I don’t think so.

Shhh … quietly La Habra is back

Eyes were opened when La Habra suffered the 45-27 loss to La Mirada and then followed that with a 34-20 loss to St. Paul. The Highlanders extended the losing streak to three with their 27-7 loss to Orange Lutheran. Since then, La Habra has won its last four games, including three Freeway League games. The Highlanders are closing in on their sixth consecutive league title and could be a sleeper in the Southwest Division playoffs.
