No. 5 EDISON (3-1) VS. NO. 15 SAN CLEMENTE (4-1)

Where, when: San Clemente High, Friday, 7 p.m.

Outlook: Edison lost to Mater Dei, 20-14, last week. The Chargers outplayed Mater Dei in some stretches, and their coaches thought a last-minute drive should have been boosted by what the Chargers thought was a Mater Dei pass interference penalty that was not called.

Well, over the course of a game or a season, calls and non-calls that don’t go your way will balance out.

Edison’s defense is one of the better units in the county, with a shutout victory over Servite two weeks ago and a good effort against Mater Dei. Edison’s passing game has not kept pace with its running attack, but showed some improvement in the Mater Dei game.

Alek Torgersen’s completion percentage was not the greatest – he was 14 of 34 – but he connected on some crucial passes down the stretch.

San Clemente again will go with third-stringer Loren Applegate to start at quarterback (starter Sean Donnelly has a strained throwing shoulder).

Applegate did not shine in San Clemente’s 28-7 loss to Newport Harbor last week, but that experience and another week of practice with the starting group will help. Going up against Edison’s defense, no matter the quarterback, is a tough challenge for San Clemente and anyone else.
