Outlook: This is a matchup of teams in the state top 25. Tesoro is No. 7 and Chaparral is No. 19 in the CalHiSports California rankings. Tesoro has beaten a couple of good teams, Hart of Newhall and Chino Hills, by three and 10 points, respectively, and walloped winless Colony of Ontario, 56-7, last week.
Chaparral last week beat Oceanside, 40-30. Oceanside was No. 12 in the state at the time. Chaparral running back Justin Harris rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns against Oceanside, and quarterback Kellen Mataafa threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.
Tesoro running back Nate Tago, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior, is averaging 146 rushing yards a game and has scored eight touchdowns with two 2-point conversions. Senior quarterback Matt Adam has seven touchdown passes.
Tesoro has won its four games by an average margin of 26 points. It won’t be that kind of margin in this one, but Tesoro, which will be a top contender in the South Coast League and in the Pac-5 Division, should win this one.
