BISHOP GORMAN OF LAS VEGAS (2-1) VS. NO. 7 SERVITE (1-2)
Where, when: Cerritos College, Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Outlook: Servite was shut out by Edison, 6-0, last week, the first shutout loss in Servite coach Troy Thomas’ eight years at the school. The Friars never crossed the Edison 35-yard line. This does not look like a bounce-back game for Servite, even if running backs Salesi Eteaki and Andrew Moore can play in this one after injuries kept Eteaki out of the Edison game and limited Moore to part-time duty.
Gorman, which beat Servite last year, 31-28, in Las Vegas, lost to Bergen Catholic of New Jersey, 42-35, last week. Gorman remained in ESPN’s national rankings, though, and is at No. 22 (Bergen is No. 19). Gaels quarterback Anu Solomon, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound senior who committed to Arizona, is averaging 238 passing yards a game, is completing 64 percent of his passes and has thrown nine touchdown passes with one interception. Senior receiver Jamir Tillman, a 6-2, 185-pound senior, has 17 receptions for 213 yards and three touchdowns. He has an offer from Navy. Senior receiver Ryan Smith, who has scholarship offers from Nevada-Las Vegas and New Mexico, has 11 receptions for 245 yards and four touchdowns.
Gorman is averaging 50 points a game since Tony Sanchez became the Gaels coach in 2009. Gorman won’t score 50 in this one. But unless Servite makes dramatic improvement offensively, the Gaels won’t need to.
