Boys cross country: Goins, MV lead the way at Woodbridge/Estancia/Costa Mesa Classic

Canyon senior Austin Goins had the best individual time of the day to win the Red Division senior race on the first day of the 2012 Woodbridge/Estancia/Costa Mesa Classic Friday night at Estancia High.

Goins, who was originally scheduled to run as an individual in Saturday’s sweepstakes race, opted to run with his fellow teammates and crossed the finish in a time of 14:46, four seconds ahead of Downey senior Andres Velasco (14:50).

Godinez senior Jose Penaloza was third in the race with a time of 15:10, with Santa Ana senior Juan Lazaro (15:16) placing fourth.

Loara’s Jairo Lemus was 10th in a time of 15:26.

In the Red Division team competition, Mission Viejo placed first with 114 points. The Diablos had five scoring runners place in the top 50, led by Andrew Brown (15:38), Cameron Ashbaugh (15:39), and T.J. Mines (15:42).

South Hills (120), Godinez (138), Laguna Hills (148), and Servite (199) rounded out the top five.

In the White Division senior race, Saddleback’s Miguel Gurrola (15:27) finished second to Bishop Gorman’s Eric Klein (15:18). Katella’s Erik Sanchez (15:34), Santiago’s Lucio Ramirez (15:38), and Sunny Hills’ Bobby Filacchoine (15:45) also finished in the top 10.

Granite Hills (77) finished first in the White Division senior team scoring, placing five runners in the top 50 overall. Yorba Linda (166) was second.

Godinez (78:57) and Mission Viejo (78:57) tied for fourth place in overall team time in Day 1 competitions. Laguna Hills (79:14) and Canyon (79:28) were eighth and ninth respectively.

Racing on Day 2 of the meet for the Blue and Gold Divisions is scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. The rated race is scheduled to start at 9:00 p.m., with the sweepstakes race slated for 9:40 p.m.
