NO.17 JSERRA (2-0) VS. BUENA PARK (3-0)
Where, when: Buena Park High, 7 p.m.
Outlook: JSerra beat a good, No. 18 Huntington Beach team, 20-13, last week. The Lions trailed by three with less than five minutes remaining, tied it on a Greg Bucilla field goal and won it when Dante Pettis picked up a blocked punt at the Huntington Beach 5-yard line and stepped into the end zone. Big plays and points are practically there for the taking in high school football, so it is a mystery why more receiving teams don’t let the hounds run loose in punting situations.
Buena Park is 3-0 by beating some struggling teams: 74-0 over Cerritos, which is 0-3; 35-0 over Schurr of Montebello, which is 0-2; and 51-12 over Magnolia, which is 0-2. Buena Park has improved rapidly since Anthony White took over as head coach three years ago.
Coyotes junior running back Deven Boston is averaging 275 rushing yards a game, and has scored a county-leading 14 touchdowns. Boston won’t get close to the 405 rushing yards he accumulated last week against Magnolia, but he will be a factor.
Buena Park must get Boston going, get the other back Hakeem Williams significantly involved in the offense, complete at least eight passes and stop JSerra’s Casey Eugenio from making all of the big plays Eugenio makes on offense, defense and special teams.
Buena Park is getting better, but still is searching for that signature victory. This could be it.
Winner: Buena Park
