NO. 5 SERVITE (0-1) VS. RANCHO CUCAMONGA (1-0)
Where, when: Colony High of Ontario, Saturday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: “Am I crazy?” Troy Thomas asked himself when the Servite coach looked at the schedule he created. Being in the Trinity League is difficult enough, but Thomas’ “Anybody, Anytime, Anywhere” nonleague scheduling philosophy brings unmatched challenges to the Friars coaching staff and players.
Year after year, no team plays a schedule as wicked as Servite’s. Last week, the Friars lost big, 40-23, to Bishop Amat of La Puente, the No. 21 team in Cal-Hi Sports state rankings. Rancho Cucamonga, a 40-17 winner over Redlands last week, is No. 10 in the state. In two weeks, Servite plays national No. 16 Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas (and later opens league against national and state No. 2 Santa Margarita). Rancho Cucamonga quarterback Adam Friederichsen, a transfer from La Costa Canyon, passed for 157 yards and three touchdowns and the Cougars running backs tandem of Kiraun Mayo and Khalil Muhammad combined for 207 rushing yards. Servite played more underclassmen than usual last week. They got a good education last week. The feeling here is that Servite still might be on the uphill slog of its learning curve.
Winner: Rancho Cucamonga
