HART OF NEWHALL (0-0) VS. NO. 4 TESORO (1-0)
Where, when: Tesoro High, Friday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: We will get a better idea of just how good Tesoro with this one. In a “why are you playing that team” game, Tesoro, No. 7 in the state rankings, walloped Compton, 55-14. Titans quarterback Matt Adam was 8 for 8, for 188 yards and three touchdowns. Hart, 8-4 last year, is No. 1 in the CIF-SS Northern Division rankings. That’s a good division, with Canyon of Canyon Country and Valencia of Valencia in it.
The returnees for Hart coach Mike Herrington, in his 23rd year coaching the Indians, include junior quarterback Connor Wingenroth, who completed 54 percent of his passes last year for 146 yards a game and 14 touchdowns with eight interceptions. He rushed for 776 yards and 10 touchdowns. Trent Irwin had 50 receptions for 785 yards and eight touchdowns in 2011. Tesoro has the advantage of having played a game, while this is Hart’s 2012 debut. If Tesoro wants us to believe that it is superior to Mission Viejo then the Titans need to win this game, and look good in doing so.
Winner: Tesoro
