BECKMAN (0-0) VS. SANTA ANA VALLEY (1-0)
Where, when: Santa Ana Stadium, Thursday, 7 p.m.
Outlook: This could be the best Valley team in a few years. Last year’s Falcons tied with Anaheim for the Orange League championship but, like the league’s other playoff teams, were eliminated in the first round.
Beckman lost to Corona del Mar by one point in the Southern Division championship game. Beckman might not be as good this year. The Patriots lost seven All-CIF players to graduation, including quarterback Cameron Biedgoly and running back Jeff Kim, and has only five returning starters. Valley opened the season last week with a 34-19 road victory over John Glenn of Norwalk. Alex Hernandez rushed for 130 yards and a touchdown, quarterback Joe Mohr completed 25 of 35 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns, and Andrew Tapia had 12 receptions for 125 yards. But the Falcons gave up a lot of rushing yardage as Glenn’s Steven Reed ran for 187. If Valley can build upon the offensive momentum of last week, and the defense does a better job of stopping the run, then the Falcons should win.
Winner: Santa Ana Valley
