Estancia alum and UCLA freshman-to-be Jake Knapp fired a 4-over 74 at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in the first round of the Pacific Coast Amateur and is tied for eight, four shots off the lead.
No one in the 78-player field came in under par on the links-style course in Bandon, Ore. on Tuesday as Lorens Chan and Gaston De La Torre share the lead with an even-par 70.
Knapp, who finished sixth in the SCGA Amateur at Big Canyon CC on Sunday, posted three consecutive bogeys on the front nine to go out at 3-over par on Tuesday, but he birdied the 530-yard par-5 16th to join three other players at 4 over.
Three more rounds remain in the prestigious amateur tournament. Knapp earned his invitation after shooting a 61 in the U.S. Open Local Qualifier at Newport Beach Country Club. That was the lowest round posted in the nation during local qualifying for the open.
