Canyon senior-to-be Elisabeth Bernabe holed two birdies during the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open on Thursday at Blackwolf Run in Kohler, Wisc. and is in a tie for 38th place, just five shots off the lead, which is held by Lizette Salas, Brittany Lincicome and Cristie Kerr .
Bernabe carded a 2-over 74 after hitting nine of 14 fairways and 13 of 18 greens in regulation. Bernabe is just one shot behind Emma Talley, who posted the best round by an amateur on Thursday. There are 28 amateurs in the field.
Bernabe will begin her second round at 5:11 a.m. Angel Yin and Haley Wilson are in her threesome. Yin and Bernabe faced each other in a playoff at the Industry Hills sectional qualifier in May to determine who would get the fourth and final spot in the Open. Bernabe beat her with a birdie. Yin, however, was an alternate, and still made it to the U.S. Open.
