FULLERTON – La Habra scored nine goals through its first three games in the Sunny Hills Summer League. Since then though, it has been a bit tougher for the Highlanders to get on the scoreboard as the Highlanders have finished with just one goal in each of their last three games, including Thursday, 1-1 tie with Chino Hills at Sunny Hills High.

It’s not for lack of trying, however, as the Highlanders fired eight shots at the Huskies’ goal in the first half alone. Few of them, though, were on target.

“We are missing some shots right now. But the potential is there,” La Habra coach Steve Aanderud said. “I am excited about the team, but we will see. I don’t want to say that we are going to be great. We may. We may not.”

The Highlanders got on the board first, when sophomore Austin Nazer finally broke through the Huskies’ big, physical defenders and snuck a shot inside the far post.

The lead was short lived, though. Just two minutes later, Joseph Trevgoda took a free kick from midfield, and the ball caught and tailwind and kept on floating toward the goal,  just making it over La Habra’s keeper and under the crossbar.

The Highlanders entered the game as the tournament’s highest scoring team. Their 11 goals, put them two in front of South Hills.

But in that span, La Habra has given up six goals, making them just one of five teams in the 15-team tournament to have allowed more than five goals. Still La Habra was in first place in the month-long tournament when Thursday’s game started with 36 points, five points ahead of second-place South Hills.

“Last year we had terrible senior leadership. We had a lot of sophomore were playing,” Aanderud said. “This year we are a little older … a little better, so the potential is there.”
