Santa Margarita senior-to-be Beau Hossler holed three birdies on the back nine on Thursday at Congressional Country Club to finish with an even-par 71 in the first round of the AT&T National PGA Tour event at Bethesda, Md.
Hossler is one shot ahead of Tiger Woods who is tied for 30th with Servite alum Patrick Cantlay. Both golfers finished with a 1-over-par 70. Woods, who is hosting the tournament, helped get Hossler a sponsor’s exemption into the tournament.
Cantlay was at 3-over at one point in his round, but he birdied three consecutive holes to get back to even-par with seven holes to play. This is the second tournament that Cantlay is playing in as a professional. He missed the cut last weekend in Cromwell, Conn. after opening the Travelers Championship with a 5-over-par round.
