Girls basketball: Samuelsons transfer to Mater Dei

June 25th, 2012, 2:22 pm · · posted by

All-state basketball players Karlie Samuelson, left, and sister Katie Lou, right, have transferred to Mater Dei from Edison, Mater Dei coach Kevin Kiernan confirmed today.

Karlie, who will be a senior this coming school year, was on CalHiSports’ all-juniors fifth team this past season. Katie Lou, who is 6-foot-2 and will be a sophomore, was all-freshman first team. Karlie, 5-11, averaged 18 points and Katie Lou averaged 19 this past season at Edison.

Kiernan said it is his understanding that the Samuelson family is making the change of residence necessary for the girls to be eligible for the entire 2012-13 season. Without making the residence change, the Samuelsons would have to sit out the first month of the season.

Kiernan said the Samuelson family went completely through the process required to transfer to Mater Dei.

“They went through the interviews, the evaluations and everything required to get into Mater Dei,” Kiernan said. “These are the most solid transfers you could find.”

He said the Samuelsons participated in their first Mater Dei practices late last week and will begin playing summer basketball with the Mater Dei team this week.

Karlie Samuelson has committed to Stanford, where older sister Bonnie, an Edison alum, is attending.
