Former Santa Margarita runner and recent UC Santa Barbara graduate Ryan Martin advanced to the semifinals of the 800 at the U.S. Track and Field Trials Friday at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Martin, a three time All-American selection with the Gauchos, finished second in his heat in a time of 1:46.92, the second fastest of the day behind Tyler Mulder of the Oregon Track Club (1:46.81).
The semifinals of the 800 are scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The top three finishers in both heats plus the next top two times will advance to Monday’s finals.
Beginning his prep running career as a junior, Martin was a two-time all-county selection who won the CIF-SS Division 3 800 title in 2006.
As a senior in 2007, Martin was named sprinter athlete of the meet at the Orange County Championships after winning the 800 and finishing second in the 200.
He successfully defended his Division 3 title at the CIF-SS Divisional Finals and placed second at the CIF State Track and Field Championships in a school record time of 1:53.23.
