Santa Margarita senior-to-be quarterback Johnny Stanton is taking an aggressive approach to his recruiting this week as the Eagles begin their dead period.
The All-County selection from 2011 plans to attend six college camps this week. Here was the schedule Stanton shared at the Air Strike passing tournament over the weekend:
Sunday: UCLA
Monday: Utah
Tuesday: Nebraska
Wednesday: Oregon State
Thursday: Oregon
Friday: Washington State
“All this week,” Stanton said. “We’ll be flying most of the time. We’re just trying to get in as many camps as possible — with the second week (of the dead period) being taken up by our (family) vacation. … The next week after that, we’re probably going to see more colleges.”
Stanton has received five offers but none of the schools on his tour have offered. “We’re just trying to see as many schools as possible,” he said. “This is our period where we are allowed to do that.”
His most recent offer is from Utah State. Cal, Washington, San Diego State and Air Force also have offered Stanton.
As for the Air Strike tournament, Stanton said the Eagles’ effort was uneven. Santa Margarita won its first four games before falling to eventual runner-up Mater Dei in the quarterfinals.
“It wasn’t the fact that we lost to Mater Dei, because they are a very good team, it was the way we lost to them,” Stanton said. “We weren’t consistently putting forth a good effort, and we weren’t proud of that.”
Stanton had a strong tournament, completing 68 of 88 passes for 23 TDs. In victories against Loyola and San Clemente, he recorded six TDs with no interceptions.
