Former Orange Lutheran coach Jim Kunau, left, has been hired as an assistant professor at Concordia University in Irvine. He will work in Concordia’s Masters in Coaching and Athletic Administration program.
Acc0rding to a Concordia media release, “Kunau will serve a large number of coaches in cultivation their coaching abilities and deepening their impact.”
Kunau earlier this year was relieved of his football coaching duties at Orange Lutheran, where he coached for 20 seasons. He transformed Lutheran football from a good small-schools program to one that was successful at the highest level of California football.
During his tenure the Lancers won CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 and CIF State championships and 11 league championships.
In his early days at Lutheran, Kunau visited as many successful coaches as he could to learn how to build the Lutheran program. Eventually, it became the other way around — young coaches trekked to Lutheran to learn from Kunua. So it looks like Kunau and this Concordia position is a perfect fit.
