An offseason of celebration for the Aliso Niguel girls’ soccer team continues.
The Wolverines were honored by ESPN last week with a ceremony at the school to celebrate their 2011-12 season that ended with the Wolverines ranked atop the ESPN POWERADE FAB 50 national girls’ soccer rankings.
Aliso Niguel won its first CIF-SS Division 1 title since 2001 in March, defeating South Coast League rival San Clemente 2-1 in a thrilling CIF-SS Division 1 championship match.
The Wolverines finished off the season with a stunning rally from a 2-0 second half deficit to defeat previously undefeated Los Osos, 3-2, in the championship match of the CIF Southern California Division 1 Regional Championships.
It was the first time that Aliso Niguel won the regional title. They are the third county team to have won both the CIF-SS Division 1 and the CIF Southern California Division 1 Regional titles in the same season, joining San Clemente (2008-09) and Esperanza (2009-10).
The Wolverines ended the season with a 23-1-4 overall record that included a 19-match unbeaten streak to begin the season and 15 shutouts.
Earlier in the offseason, the Wolverines were honored by Max Preps for ending the season ranked No. 1 in their national rankings.
