Boys golf: U.S. Open qualifying, Hossler, Campbell in good position

June 4th, 2012, 1:52 pm · · posted by

After playing his first 18 holes in U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying on Monday, Santa Margarita junior Beau Hossler is tied for 15th, four strokes out of the lead.

Only the top seven will advance to the U.S. Open which will be held at the Olympic Club in a little more than a week. Hossler is two shots behind seventh place.

Hossler shot a 2-under 70 at Lake Merced Golf Club, and will now head to TPC Harding Park, which seems to be the easier of the two courses as four of the players in the top six played their morning 18 at Harding Park.

Brian Campbell, a former standout from Mater Dei, shot a 1-under 71 at Lake Merced and is tied for 25th. USC sophomore and former Sunny Hills star Jeffrey Kang fired an even-par 72 at Lake Merced and is tied for 40th.

Jake Knapp, a senior at Estancia, and Raymund Gonzales Jr., a sophomore at Mission Viejo, both opened with a 4-over round and are tied for 95th.

Both players made it to sectional qualifying through the Newport Beach local qualifier. Knapp was the medalist shooting a 10-under 61 at Newport Beach Country Club, which was the lowest scored post in the nation during local qualifying. Gonzales carded a 2-under 69 there.
