Villa Park wrestling coach Aaron Cross, the 2011-12 Register coach of the year, confirmed that he is stepping down from the position. He said he will stay on campus as teacher.
“I’ve been a head coach for 11 years,” Cross said. “It is time to step back and re-prioritize my life.”
Cross alluded to a recent health scare as one reason to step down. His appendix burst last month. He is scheduled for surgery in August. He has since returned to work.
“It was a wake-up call,” he said.
The Spartans had a memorable season.
Villa Park won their first league title in a decade, finished in the top four at CIF-SS Duals, third at individuals and sent three to the CIF state tournament. Heavyweight David Trujillo would eventually finish fourth at state.
“We had a tremendous group of kids,” he said. “It was a great year.”
Interested candidates in the coaching job should email their resume to Villa Park athletic director Tom Fox at tfox@orangeusd.org.
