Mike Mitchell, one of the first stars of Gary McKnight’s championships-filled tenure at Mater Dei, has resigned as boys basketball head coach at Ramona High to become an assistant coach at Santa Margarita, according to a Riverside Press-Enterprise online report.
Mitchell, who played at Mater Dei in the mid-1980s, went on to play at Fresno State and transferred to Colorado State where he was Western Athletic Conference player of the year. He played professionally in Australia. He has had assistant coaching stints in college basketball and in the WNBA.
Santa Margarita last month hired longtime college basketball coach Jeff Reinert as boys basketball coach.
