Boys track and field: Big day for San Clemente duo

San Clemente senior Herbert Gamboa is now ranked among the state's top 10 100 and 200 runners after his lifetime best efforts on Wednesday.

Despite  a narrow 69-67 loss to Sea View League rival Capistrano Valley in Wednesday’s dual meet action, two of San Clemente’s top athletes enjoyed standout efforts.

Tritons senior Herbert Gamboa won the 100 in a wind-legal lifetime best of 10.64. That is the fastest  wind-legal fully automated time run in the county this season and is the sixth fastest in the state.

Gamboa’s time is tied for the 10th fastest wind-legal effort in county history. It is also the second best in school history, trailing only Tim Martin’s 1991 time of 10.56.

Gamboa also captured the 200 in a wind-legal lifetime best of 21.78. That time is the second best wind-legal time in the county this season, trailing only Mater Dei senior Austin Hazel (21.62). It is currently the fifth best wind-legal time in the state.

Also, Tritons senior Quaid Vuncannon recorded a lifetime best throw of 188 feet, seven inches to finish first in the discus. Vuncannon, who is the school’s all-time discus record holder, cuurently has the second best throw in the county and the fifth best throw in the state.
