
The quest to be one of the nation’s top multi-event athletes is halfway complete for Dana Hills senior Tori Usgaard, who is in first place after the first day of the heptathlon at the 2012 Arcadia Multis.
Spurred by victories in the 100 hurdles (15.17) and the high jump (a lifetime best 5-5), Usgaard finished the first day of competition with 2,707 points.
Junior Alyssa Thompson from Salpointe Catholic in Tucson, Arizona is currently in second place with a total of 2,665 points.
Sophomore Shaina Burns from Lakeville South High in Lakeville, Minnesota is third with a total of 2,633 points.
Friday’s heptathlon schedule will feature the long jump, the javelin throw, and the 800.
Dana Hills senior Keith Messinger closed the first day of competition in the decathlon in third place with a total of 3,086 points.
Grant Zebold, a junior from Cathedral Catholic High in San Diego, won the 100 (11.08), the long jump (20-3), and the 400 (51.02) to lead the competition with 3,365 points.
Junior Brendan Weaver of Palos Verdes High is currently second with 3,131 points.
Messinger claimed victory in the shot put with a throw of 36-6¼.
The decathlon will continue Friday with the 110 hurdles, the discus, the pole vault, the javelin throw, and the 1500.
