Boys volleyball: Orange Lutheran scores big upset

Orange Lutheran went on the road and scored a big upset.

The Lancers (12-12, 1-2) dropped the first two games against fifth-ranked Mater Dei (6-3, 2-1), but rallied back in grand style, winning the final three games to win the Trinity League match 20-25, 16-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-11.

Mater Dei must now try and regroup for Thursday’s showdown with top-ranked Servite.

Also in the Trinity League
No. 1 Servite 3, St. John Bosco 0: Madison Hayden led the Friars with 15 kills and Kyle Palmer had eight with five blocks as the Friars (20-2-1, 3-0) swept the Braves, 25-19, 25-23, 25-18.

Santa Margarita 3, JSerra 1: Mitch Vallis led the Eagles (9-9, 2-1) with 27 kills in their 25-16, 20-25, 25-15, 25-20 home victory.  Braxton Luke added nine kills for the Eagles.

Tom Thayer led JSerra, who is 0-3 in league, with 10 kills.

In the Sunset League

No. 4 Huntington Beach 3, No. 9 Los Alamitos 0: Zach Gates and Bert Payton had nine kills apiece for the Oilers (8-3, 2-0) and Matt Butler had 22 assists and five digs in the 25-18, 25-15, 25-16 road victory.

In the Academy League

Crean Lutheran 3, Sage Hill 2: Kevin Baran-Maguire’s 24 kills helped lead Crean Lutheran to a 22-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-23, 15-13 home victory.

Ryan MacDougall had 10 kills and 13 digs for Crean Lutheran.
