Esperanza really needed to win Saturday’s match against Canyon to have any hope of being one of the Century League’s representatives in the CIF-SS playoffs.
And in the closing seconds of the second 10-minute golden-goal overtime period, the Aztecs got the goal they were looking for.
At the time Canyon decided to move its goal keeper up top to gain an extra attacker, but the ball was headed out to the top of the Aztecs’ box by Josh Gutierrez where Brady Johansen was waiting for the ball. He made it past a couple Canyon defenders, dribbled up the field to the Comanches’ 18 and hooked the ball over the final Canyon player standing between him and the goal.
That shot resulted in the game winner for the Aztecs. Esperanza has one more game remaining. The Aztecs play at El Modena on Thursday. The Aztecs are 3-0 this season at Fred Kelly Stadium.
Special thanks to Jeff Johansen for providing the game details.
