We’ve been told by multiple people in multiple ways that Jim Kunau, left, is no longer the varsity football head coach at Orange Lutheran.
Kunau said today, “I am still the football coach at Orange Lutheran High School.” He declined to comment on rumors that his status at Orange Lutheran has changed or is about to change.
Lutheran did not qualify for the playoffs the past two seasons, following an 11-year streak of playoff appearances.
Kuanu just completed his 19th season coaching the Lancers.
He has been the guy at the steering wheel as the Orange Lutheran football program has evolved from a successful small schools program to a championship mid-division team and on to being a league champion in the Trinity League, a CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 champion and a CIF State champion.
Lutheran football’s climb has not been shadowed by allegations of recruiting or other bending of rules, itself a notable achievement.
Kunau’s record at Orange Lutheran: 182-52-3.
The 2011 season was a bumpy one for the Lancers. They finished tied for last place, with JSerra, in the six-team Trinity League and lost to JSerra for the first time.
