Orange Lutheran senior boys basketball guard Gabe York, left, has been suspended by the CIF-Southern Section for two games for violating CIF rule 600 — “Outside Competition.”
York played in an adult league basketball game Sunday night, playing on an older brother’s team that was shorthanded. He did this before he got medical clearance to play basketball — York has been recovering from a Dec. 31 appendectomy that had him miss some Trinity League games.
He was medically cleared to return, on Monday. York’s mother found out that Gabe had played in the Sunday night game, and told Lutheran coach Chris Nordstrom. Lutheran reported the violation to the CIF-Southern Section. According to Rule 601, the penalty for a first violation of 600 is the student is ineligible for twice as many high school games as the number of outside CIF games in which the student participated.
York, who signed with Arizona, had to sit out Orange Lutheran’s game Monday against La Verne Lutheran, and the Lancers’ Trinity League game Wednesday against St. John Bosco of Bellflower, which is tied with Mater Dei for first place.
The good side is that his suspension is not because of criminal activity. Still, this is inexcusable. He took the risk of injuring himself — that scar from the surgery still is going to be tender.
